Internationalisation level, Distribution of Decision-Making Power and Alliance Formation: Evidence from the Italian Machine Tool Industry

We explore how internationalization-orientation and family business-configuration influence the propensity of Italian Machine Tool (MT) firms to sign strategic alliances. Starting from the industry sector analysis and literature review we propose a conceptual framework explaining alliance formation determinants. Our study uses the information provided by a representative sample of Italian MT firms. We argue and our data validate that the centralization of decision-making power acts as a moderator enhancing the positive effect of the internationalization on the firm inclination in signing agreements with other companies.

The theme of internationalization in family businesses is a highly topical issue that is increasingly attracting management scholars. This is because, in addition of being a particular type of business (Alcorn, 1982), they play a central role in most economies worldwide. Accounting for 65-80 percent of all the world’s firms, they generate around 70-90 percent of annual global GDP, and are the source of 50-80 percent of new jobs in most countries. The aim of this paper is to analyze the content of a questionnaire that is used in order to conduct a Finnish Family Firms’ Association’s annual barometer for its members. The content of the questionnaire is reflected to a relevant theory and compared with two other fairly similar questionnaires. The Effects of Internationalization on CEO Compensation

This study examines the relation between the internationalization of firms and CEO compensation. Starting from a sample of Norwegian and Swedish listed firms, we analyze the effects of internationalization as manifest in the capital market (international cross-listing), the market for corporate control (foreign board membership), and the product and service market (export and foreign sales). We conclude that all three markets contribute positively to the compensation level of CEOs. To lead or to wait? An application to internationalization strategies under demand uncertainty

We examine the exports versus foreign direct investment (FDI) decision under demand uncertainty for an asymmetric cost duopoly. One of the firms can lead entry before demand realization or retain flexibility enjoying an informational advantage. When the time value of information is small and for sufficiently low investment costs, follow‐the‐leader behavior in FDI arises. Relatively high investment (fixed) costs result in follow‐the‐leader exporting behavior. When the time value of information becomes significant, the potential leader will opt for a wait‐and‐see strategy. For intermediate values of investment costs, the efficient firm invests, while the rival chooses to export.
Internationalization pathways of family SMEs:Psychic distance as a focal point

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate how psychic distance affects the internationalization process, foreign market entry (FME), and entry mode choice of Finnish small and medium-sized family enterprises (family SMEs) operating in France. Design/methodology/approach: The paper reports findings from an in-depth case study covering four Finnish manufacturing family SMEs operating in the French market. On the Internationalization of Corporate Boards

Despite the global reach of their commercial activities, many multinational firms have proved slow in internationalizing their boards of directors. Based on a panel study of the internationalization of the boards of 347 non-financial firms from the Nordic countries, we find a higher fraction of international board membership in firms with more foreign sales, in firms with more foreign ownership and in firms whose shares are traded on foreign (mostly European) stock exchanges.
