The Cultivation of Astronomy in Spanish Universities in the Latter Half of the 16th Century

2006

The four universities known to have taught mathematics in the 16th century in what is now known as Spain, were Salamanca, Valencia, Alcala, and, at the end of the century, Seville. In addition to being taught at university, astronomy was also taught in other institutions such as for example, the Casa de la Contratacion of Seville, the so-called Mathematics Academy of Madrid, certain naval academies and, towards the end of the century, certain Jesuit schools. At the University of Valencia, following the official foundation of the Estudi or center of learning in 1500, a chair of mathematics was set up in 1503, although we have no documentary evidence of the subjects taught there in the early …

Investigating student nurses' constructions of health promotion in nursing education

2001

This article describes student nurses' constructions of health promotion and the change of these constructions during their nursing education in two Finnish polytechnics. The data consisted of essays written by the 19 student nurses before they began their nursing education in 1997 and of stimulated recall interviews with the same students during the second year of their education in 1998. The data were analyzed by using thematic analysis. During the first study year, 13 students' constructions of health promotion changed. Six students had initially broad constructions of health promotion and their constructions remained unchanged. Four basic changes were found in the students' construction…

Female Cyborgs, Gender Performance, and Utopian Gaze in Alex Garland’s Ex Machina

2020

The cyborg as a metaphor for cultural encodings of the interaction between humans and technology has been an accepted trope since the publication of Donna Haraway’s “Cyborg Manifesto.” Alex Garland’s 2015 film Ex Machina shares many of its key themes and motifs with earlier science fiction films, from Fritz Lang’s Metropolis to Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner. A first viewing of the film thus suggests an interpretation that focuses on the film’s portrayal of its female cyborgs Ava and Kyoko as another version of the “pleasure model” in the mode of Lang’s Maria or Scott’s Pris. However, it is the tension between Ava’s intelligence and visual attractiveness and her performance of a female gender …

LogDet divergence-based metric learning with triplet constraints and its applications.

2014

How to select and weigh features has always been a difficult problem in many image processing and pattern recognition applications. A data-dependent distance measure can address this problem to a certain extent, and therefore an accurate and efficient metric learning becomes necessary. In this paper, we propose a LogDet divergence-based metric learning with triplet constraints (LDMLT) approach, which can learn Mahalanobis distance metric accurately and efficiently. First of all, we demonstrate the good properties of triplet constraints and apply it in LogDet divergence-based metric learning model. Then, to deal with high-dimensional data, we apply a compressed representation method to learn…

In light of the ends. Copyright hysteresis and private copy exception after the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (BASCA) and oth…

2015

In British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (BASCA) and others v Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, the High Court of Justice in matter of private copy exception provides the twofold prime opportunity to shed light on the state of the art of copyright in the UK and to flesh out the idea of 'legal hysteresis’. I support the reintroduction of the private copy exception, possibly in a less narrow fashion, and I explain the reasons why I am confident that my expectations will be fulfilled.

Interpretazione convenzionalmente conforme e bilanciamento. Un'appendice.

2020

This paper critically analyses the relationship between the ECtHR balance in implementing a right based on the ECHR and the ECHR-driven interpretation by the domestic judge in applying defenses. While ECHR-driven interpretation is kept within the boundaries of the wording of the law, the balance is per se integrative-additive, so it goes by definition beyond such boundaries. Consequently, the ‘case by case’ approach at a domestic level could be more difficult and this would require to involve the Constitutional Court.

The interpretation of Bach's gamba sonata BWV 1029 on the cello

2006

Masteroppgave i utøvende musikk 2006 - Høgskolen i Agder, Kristiansand The interpretation of Bach’s gamba sonata BWV 1029 on the cello deals with the interpretation of gamba sonatas on the cello from the modern perspective. It is written in the English language by Ana Marinkovic and it is 55 pages long. It is a master thesis from the Agder University College, the Conservatory of Music in Kristiansand Norway, the classical department. Key words in my thesis are: Baroque style, analysis, interpretation, gamba and cello. I am trying to explore the historical interpretation of Baroque music, through the sonata BWV1029 which was written in that period by Johan Sebastian Bach (1685- 1750). Accord…

Beneficia imperiali e 'logica del sistema'. Spunti di metodo tra le righe di Alberto Burdese.

2016

The contribution deals with some hermeneutical positions of classical Jurists concerning the beneficia imperialia from the point of view of their deviating from the ‘ratio iuris’. The Author – by recalling the metodological warning of Alberto Burdese about paying vigilant and cautious attention for the textual data – examines some sources which regard the relationship between beneficia and regulae iuris and between beneficia, aequitas, utilitas and the attribution of the interpretation of beneficia directly to the Emperor.

Abstract: This article analyses the structure of evolutiona…

Bicausative matrices to measure structural change: Are they a good tool?

1999

The causative-matrix method to analyze temporal change assumes that a matrix transforms one Markovian transition matrix into another by a left multiplication of the first matrix; the method is demand-driven when applied to input-output economics. An extension is presented without assuming the demand-driven or supply-driven hypothesis. Starting from two flow matrices X and Y, two diagonal matrices are searched, one premultiplying and the second postmultiplying X, to obtain a result the closer as possible to Y by least squares. The paper proves that the method is deceptive because the diagonal matrices are unidentified and the interpretation of results is unclear. Keywords : Input-Output ; Ch…
