Two-Dimensional Melting Approached via Finite-Size Scaling of Bond-Orientational Order

Relying on Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate the hard-disk melting transition. The finite-size scaled values of the bond-orientational order parameter moments are obtained with the block analysis technique. The behaviour of Binder's cumulant and the susceptibility favour an interpretation in terms of a first-order transition.

In this paper we compare two different approaches for the calculation of the enhancement factor Wi , based on its definition as the ratio of the chemical and the component diffusion coefficients for species in mixed-conduction electrodes, originated from the “dilute solution” or “lattice gas” models for the ion system. The former approach is only applicable for small changes of the ion concentration while the latter allows one to consider a broad range of intercalation levels. Estimation of the elastic parameters of human liver biomechanical models by means of medical images and evolutionary computation.

This paper presents a method to computationally estimate the elastic parameters of two biomechanical models proposed for the human liver. The method is aimed at avoiding the invasive measurement of its mechanical response. The chosen models are a second order Mooney–Rivlin model and an Ogden model. A novel error function, the geometric similarity function (GSF), is formulated using similarity coefficients widely applied in the field of medical imaging (Jaccard coefficient and Hausdorff coefficient). Parametric and nonparametric methods to generate time-varying surrogate data.

We present both nonparametric and parametric approaches to generating time-varying surrogate data. Nonparametric and parametric approaches are based on the use of the short-time Fourier transform and a time-varying autoregressive model, respectively. Time-varying surrogate data (TVSD) can be used to determine the statistical significance of the linear and nonlinear coherence function estimates. Two advantages of the TVSD are that it keeps one from having to make an arbitrary decision about the significance of the coherence value, and it properly takes into account statistical significance levels, which may change with time. A Preference-Based Evolutionary Algorithm for Multi-Objective Optimization

In this paper, we discuss the idea of incorporating preference information into evolutionary multi-objective optimization and propose a preference-based evolutionary approach that can be used as an integral part of an interactive algorithm. One algorithm is proposed in the paper. At each iteration, the decision maker is asked to give preference information in terms of his or her reference point consisting of desirable aspiration levels for objective functions. NoteAbout the Concept of “Net Multipliers”

Net multipliers, as introduced by Oosterhaven and Stelder (2002) accept outputs as entries instead of final demand. They are found by multiplying ordinary multipliers by the final demand ratio over the sector’s output. This pragmatic solution suffers from ratio instability over time. The alternative net multipliers proposed here are based on the interpretation of the Leontief inverse matrix for the effects generated at each round. The new solution is not sensitive to the size of impacts. Now net multiplier is equal to the corresponding ordinary multiplier minus one, and the ordering of multipliers is unchanged.

In this essay I will attempt to answer the critical observations made by Kristan, Poggi and Vignolo of my theory of legal interpretation. I express the opinion that, apart from some gaps and defects to be addressed, my theory can satisfactorily overcome this criticism. In answering these observations, I again stress the fruitfulness of moderate contextualism as a semantical point of reference for legal interpretation, also striving to deepen the notion of “background context”, and to clarify the differences among four types of interpretative disagreements. Stochastic dynamics of nonlinear systems driven by non-normal delta-correlated processes

In this paper, nonlinear systems subjected to external and parametric non-normal delta-correlated stochastic excitations are treated. A new interpretation of the stochastic differential calculus allows first a full explanation of the presence of the Wong-Zakai or Stratonovich correction terms in the Itoˆ’s differential rule. Then this rule is extended to take into account the non-normality of the input. The validity of this formulation is confirmed by experimental results obtained by Monte Carlo simulations.
