Subjectivity as a Non-Textual Standard of Interpretation in the History of Philosophical Psychology

2008

Contemporary caution against anachronism in intellectual history, and the currently mo mentous theoretical emphasis on subjectivity in the philosophy of mind, are two prevailing conditions that set puzzling constraints for studies in the history of philosophical psychol ogy. The former urges against assuming ideas, motives, and concepts that are alien to the historical intellectual setting under study, and combined with the latter suggests caution in relying on our intuitions regarding subjectivity due to the historically contingent charac terizations it has attained in contemporary philosophy of mind. In the face of these condi tions, our paper raises a question of what we call non-textual…

Meeting the Discipline-Culture Framework of Physics Knowledge: A Teaching Experience in Italian Secondary School

2014

The paper deals with physics teaching/learning in high school. An investigation in three upper secondary school classes in Italy explored the reactions of students to a structuring lecture on optics within the discipline-culture (DC) framework that organises physics knowledge around four interrelated fundamental theories of light. The lecture presented optics as an unfolding conceptual discourse of physicists regarding the nature of light. Along with the knowledge constructed in a school course of a scientific lyceum, the students provided epistemological comments, displaying their perception of physics knowledge presented in the classroom. Students’ views and knowledge were investigated by…

¿Tiene arraigo en el cerebro la libertad?

2017

2016

Hegel’s Science of Logic contains a refutation ( Widerlegung ) of Spinoza’s system on whose correct understanding depends the adequate interpretation of the philosophical point of view of Hegel’s original brand of Idealism. I stress its importance, then indicate where to look for the rebuttal in the work and finally explain in what sense has a logical character (it is neither a phenomenological nor an epistemological nor a moral or practical argument). Also, some relatively recent approaches to many of the key passages are discussed in the paper, because they have fostered confusion about the way Hegel opposes Spinozism – which really is neither Kant’s nor Fichte’s way. http://dx.doi.org/10…

Edusemiotics, Existential Semiotics, and Existential Pedagogy

2016

This chapter examines how the edusemiotic understanding of education can be developed by utilizing certain notions arising from existential pedagogy and existential semiotics. The chapter begins by the authors’ interpretation of Martin Heidegger’s semiotically useful concept of unconcealment in terms of a pedagogical theory compatible with the concept of Bildung. The chapter proceeds to demonstrate how it has been implemented in philosophy of education so as to articulate an existentially discontinuous form of education. Education viewed as the most important task of/for humanity entails a fundamental disruption of continuity: we do not know what kind of humanity we want or need as a way of…

Literal translation in the audiovisual field. Methods and techniques

2017

The debate on literal translation is an old one, and it will surely continue to exist for the time to come. In any case, it is not intended to address that discussion here, but rather to take a descriptive, nonjudgmental look at the matter for the sole purpose of pointing out the need for more precise terminology when speaking about literal translation, especially in translation teaching. As it will be explained, literal translation can be both a translation method and a translation technique and it seems appropriate to be aware of what we mean exactly when we use this label. Moreover, as it will be shown, the positions in either direction (method or technique) remain in force, although the…

J. S. Beck’s Theory of theOriginal Representingas an Interpretation of Kant

2021

AbstractThis paper explores Beck’s theory oforiginal representingin order to discuss both its historical and theoretical relevance and its implications concerning Kant’s views on the capacity to judge. My first concern will be to highlight the main points of Beck’s Kant interpretation and to show at which points he misunderstands Kant. My analysis also contains a positive aspect, for I adopt Beck’s claim that there is only one possible standpoint from which critical philosophy ought to be judged. Unlike Beck, I shall argue that this standpoint is that of Judgment’s normativity. I will consider the normative structure of Judgment from three perspectives: the proto-synthetic import of sensibi…

What ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ are the στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου?

2014

The expression τὰ στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου is one of the most discussed, and most disputed, phrases in Galatians. In the following article, insight into the meaning of this phrase is sought by first of all clarifying and summarising the full scope of issues which must be explained by any interpretation of the phrase. Such a summary overview has often not appeared in various scholarly discussions. Subsequently, the primary proposed interpretations are discussed with the argument ultimately being made that it is Paul’s conception of ‘the world’ which provides the key to a solution to the interpretive conundrum that best satisfies the entire context of Paul’s letter and argument.

Foundations of quantum mechanics and their impact on contemporary society

2018

Nearing a century since its inception, quantum mechanics is as lively as ever. Its signature manifestations, such as superposition, wave-particle duality, uncertainty principle, entanglement and nonlocality, were long confronted as weird predictions of an incomplete theory, paradoxes only suitable for philosophical discussions, or mere mathematical artifacts with no counterpart in the physical reality. Nevertheless, decades of progress in the experimental verification and control of quantum systems have routinely proven detractors wrong. While fundamental questions still remain wide open on the foundations and interpretations of quantum mechanics, its modern technological applications have …
