Context Trees, Variable Length Markov Chains and Dynamical Sources

2012

Infinite random sequences of letters can be viewed as stochastic chains or as strings produced by a source, in the sense of information theory. The relationship between Variable Length Markov Chains (VLMC) and probabilistic dynamical sources is studied. We establish a probabilistic frame for context trees and VLMC and we prove that any VLMC is a dynamical source for which we explicitly build the mapping. On two examples, the "comb" and the "bamboo blossom", we find a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence and the uniqueness of a stationary probability measure for the VLMC. These two examples are detailed in order to provide the associated Dirichlet series as well as the genera…

Probabilistic entailment and iterated conditionals

2020

In this paper we exploit the notions of conjoined and iterated conditionals, which are defined in the setting of coherence by means of suitable conditional random quantities with values in the interval $[0,1]$. We examine the iterated conditional $(B|K)|(A|H)$, by showing that $A|H$ p-entails $B|K$ if and only if $(B|K)|(A|H) = 1$. Then, we show that a p-consistent family $\mathcal{F}=\{E_1|H_1,E_2|H_2\}$ p-entails a conditional event $E_3|H_3$ if and only if $E_3|H_3=1$, or $(E_3|H_3)|QC(\mathcal{S})=1$ for some nonempty subset $\mathcal{S}$ of $\mathcal{F}$, where $QC(\mathcal{S})$ is the quasi conjunction of the conditional events in $\mathcal{S}$. Then, we examine the inference rules $A…

INTERVAL-BASED TRACING OF STRANGE ATTRACTORS

2006

The method described here relies on interval arithmetic and graph theory to compute guaranteed coverings of strange attractors like Hénon attractor. It copes with infinite intervals, using either a geometric method or a new directed projective interval arithmetic.

Ranking fuzzy interval numbers in the setting of random sets – further results

1999

Abstract We present some new properties of several fuzzy order relations, defined on the set of fuzzy numbers, from among those introduced in [S. Chanas, M. Delgado, J.L. Verdegay, M.A. Vila, Information Sciences 69 (1993) 201–217]. The main result is proving that four from among the relations considered in [S. Chanas, M. Delgado, J.L. Verdegay, M.A. Vila, Information Sciences 69 (1993) 201–217] are strongly transitive (s-transitive).

On Different Type Solutions of Boundary Value Problems

2016

We consider boundary value problems of the type x'' = f(t, x, x'), (∗) x(a) = A, x(b) = B. A solution ξ(t) of the above BVP is said to be of type i if a solution y(t) of the respective equation of variations y'' = fx(t, ξ(t), ξ' (t))y + fx' (t, ξ(t), ξ' (t))y' , y(a) = 0, y' (a) = 1, has exactly i zeros in the interval (a, b) and y(b) 6= 0. Suppose there exist two solutions x1(t) and x2(t) of the BVP. We study properties of the set S of all solutions x(t) of the equation (∗) such that x(a) = A, x'1(a) ≤ x' (a) ≤ x'2(a) provided that solutions extend to the interval [a, b].

Pharmacological distribution diagrams: a tool for de novo drug design.

1996

Abstract Discriminant analysis applied to SAR studies using topological descriptors allows us to plot frequency distribution diagrams: a function of the number of drugs within an interval of values of discriminant function vs. these values. We make use of these representations, pharmacological distribution diagrams (PDDs), in structurally heterogeneous groups where generally they adopt skewed Gaussian shapes or present several maxima. The maxima afford intervals of discrimianant function in which exists a good expectancy to find new active drugs. A set of β-blockers with contrasted activity has been selected to test the ability of PDDs as a visualizing technique, for the identification of n…

[Drugs use in pregnancy in the Valencia Region and the risk of congenital anomalies].

2017

Background Despite the potential risks of drug use during pregnancy, consumption has increased in recent decades. Objective To identify the risk of congenital anomalies (CA) associated with the use of drugs in primary care in pregnant women resident in the Valencia Region. Methods A case-control study, considering a case as a less than one year old live birth in 2009–2010, diagnosed with a CA and resident in the Valencia Region, obtained from the CA population-based registry. Controls were selected from the Metabolic Disease Registry, and the drugs prescribed and dispensed from the Integral Management of Pharmaceutical Services. Crude odds ratio (OR) was calculated with its 95% confidence i…

Novo, S. et al. Aliskiren: Just a New Drug for Few Selected Patients or an Innovative Molecule Predestinated to Replace Arbs and Ace-Inhibitors? Phar…

2011

The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) plays a dominant role in the pathophysiology of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease and chronic heart failure. Therefore, drugs that block key components of the RAAS such as ACE inhibitors (ACEI) and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) have gained wide clinical use for these indications. Despite progress, the morbidity and mortality of patients treated with ACEI or ARBs remain high. Aliskiren (Tekturna, Rasilez) is the first orally active inhibitor of renin approved for clinical use as an antihypertensive agent. The development program has established that at the licensed doses of 150 mg and 300 mg. Aliskiren is effective …

Drug-drug interactions in a cohort of hospitalized elderly patients

2013

Purpose The aim of this study is to assess the prevalence of patients exposed to potentially severe drug–drug interactions (DDIs) at hospital admission and discharge and the related risk of in-hospital mortality and adverse clinical events, readmission, and all-cause mortality at 3months. Methods This cross-sectional, prospective study was held in 70 Italian internal medicine and geriatric wards. Potentially severe DDIs at hospital admission and discharge; risk of in-hospital mortality and of adverse clinical events, readmission, and all-cause mortality at 3-month follow-up. Results Among 2712 patients aged 65years or older recruited at hospital admission, 1642 (60.5%) were exposed to at le…

Temporal difference method for processing dynamic speckle patterns

2010

A temporal difference method for processing dynamic speckle images is proposed. In the method two speckle images of an object, separated by a time interval, are subtracted one from the other to detect whether the speckle structure has changed or not. The rationale of the method is discussed. A variant of the method that allows measuring the area of an activity zone surrounded by a static region is tested in digital simulations. As a demonstrative experiment, that variant is employed to characterize the drying of a damp patch in filter paper.
