Management of returned anti-neoplastic treatments and their reuse in oncology patients

2009

Abstract Objective Analyse the profile of parenteral preparation and treatment (anti-neoplastic and supplementary) that were dispensed and returned to the Pharmacy Department, the reasons why they were not administered, their reuse and the associated direct costs. Method Longitudinal study over 8 months (October 2004-May 2005) in a tertiary hospital with centre for preparing anti-neoplastic agents (including supplementary treatment) in its Pharmacy Department. The variables studied, downloaded from the Oncofarm® application, are as follows: a) patients and diagnostics; b) returned treatments, classified by reason returned, pharmaco-therapeutic scheme, cycle, and day; c) returned preparation…

Learning to perceive time: A connectionist, memory-decay model of the development of interval timing in infants

2011

International audience; We present the first developmental model of interval timing. It is a memory-based connectionist model of how infants learn to perceive time. It has two novel features that are not found in other models. First, it uses the uncertainty of a memory for an event as an index of how long ago that event happened. Secondly, embodiment – specifically, infant motor activity – is crucial to the calibration of time-perception both within and across sensory modalities. We describe the model and present three simulations which show (1) how it uses sensory memory uncertainty and bodily representaions to index time, (2) that the scalar property of interval timing (Gibbon, 1977) emer…

Characteristics of SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern B.1.1.7, B.1.351 or P.1: data from seven EU/EEA countries, weeks 38/2020 to 10/2021

2021

COVID study groups - PORTUGAL: Portuguese Laboratory Network for the Diagnosis of COVID-19 and Public Health Department of the Health Administrative Regions, Physicians that provided data and samples from suspected cases and SARS-CoV-2 genetic characterization. INSA laboratory team for the diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2. Algarve Biomedical Center and Unilabs. We compared 19,207 cases of SARS-CoV-2 variant B.1.1.7/S gene target failure (SGTF), 436 B.1.351 and 352 P.1 to non-variant cases reported by seven European countries. COVID-19 cases with these variants had significantly higher adjusted odds ratios for hospitalisation (B.1.1.7/SGTF: 1.7, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.0-2.9; B.1.351: 3.6, 95…

Modelling and forecasting mortality in Spain

2008

[EN] Experience shows that static life tables overestimate death probabilities. As a consequence of this overestimation the premiums for annuities, pensions and life insurance are not what they actually should be, with negative effects for insurance companies or policy-holders. The reason for this overestimation is that static life tables, through being computed for a specific period of time, cannot take into account the decreasing mortality trend over time. Dynamic life tables overcome this problem by incorporating the influence of the calendar when graduating mortality. Recent papers on the topic look for the development of new methods to deal with this dynamism. Most methods used in dyna…

Privacy and temporal aware allocation of data in decentralized online social networks

2017

Distributed Online Social Networks (DOSNs) have recently been proposed to grant users more control over the data they share with the other users. Indeed, in contrast to centralized Online Social Networks (such as Facebook), DOSNs are not based on centralized storage services, because the contents shared by the users are stored on the devices of the users themselves. One of the main challenges in a DOSN comes from guaranteeing availability of the users' contents when the data owner disconnects from the network. In this paper, we focus our attention on data availability by proposing a distributed allocation strategy which takes into account both the privacy policies defined on the contents an…

Decongestion discriminates risk for one-year mortality in patients with improving renal function in acute heart failure

2021

Aims Improving renal function (IRF) is paradoxically associated with worse outcomes in acute heart failure (AHF), but outcomes may differ based on response to decongestion. We explored if the relationship of IRF with mortality in hospitalized AHF patients differs based on successful decongestion. Methods and results We evaluated 760 AHF patients from AKINESIS for the relationship between IRF, change in B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP), and 1-year mortality. IRF was defined as a >= 20% increase in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) relative to admission. Adequate decongestion was defined as a >= 40% decrease in last measured BNP relative to admission. IRF occurred in 22% of pat…

Laryngeal Mask Airway Position and the Risk of Gastric Insufflation

1998

A potential risk of the laryngeal mask airway (LMA) is an incomplete mask seal causing gastric insufflation or oropharyngeal air leakage. The objective of the present study was to assess the incidence of LMA malpositions by fiberoptic laryngoscopy, and to determine their influence on gastric insufflation and oropharyngeal air leakage. One hundred eight patients were studied after the induction of anesthesia, before any surgical manipulations. After clinically satisfactory LMA placement, tidal volumes were increased stepwise until air entered the stomach, airway pressure exceeded 40 cm H2 O, or air leakage from the mask seal prevented further increases in tidal volume. LMA position in relatio…

Spatially chaotic configurations and functional equations with rescaling

1996

The functional equation is associated with the appearance of spatially chaotic structures in amorphous (glassy) materials. Continuous compactly supported solutions of the above equation are of special interest. We shall show that there are no such solutions for , whereas such a solution exists for almost all . The words `for almost all q' in the previous sentence cannot be omitted. There are exceptional values of q in the interval for which there are no integrable solutions. For example, , which is the reciprocal of the `golden ratio' is such an exceptional value. More generally, if is any Pisot - Vijayaraghavan number, or any Salem number, then is an exceptional value.

Model Exploration and Computer Experiments

2017

This chapter contains a description of a set of simulation experiments for exploration of the agent-based model proposed in the present work, devised to illustrate the model’s generative capacity and highlight the influence of the newly introduced mechanisms on the complexity of the solutions. The first experiment shows the influence of the critical “cop”-to-“active” ratio ρ c in the risk perception model on the size, duration, and recurrence of rebellion peaks. The relationship between ρ c , the occurrence of cascades and the maximum possible peak size was demonstrated analytically and then studied via computer simulations. It was shown that the value of ρ c has a strong impact on the stab…

The resemblance of an autocorrelation function to a power spectrum density for a spike train of an auditory model

2013

In this work we develop an analytical approach for calculation of the all-order interspike interval density (AOISID), show its connection with the autocorrelation function, and try to explain the discovered resemblance of AOISID to the power spectrum of the same spike train.
