The role of practitioners in helping persons make effective use of information and communication technology in career interventions

2019

We examine the role of counselors and other practitioners in delivering career interventions using Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Current benefits and limitations of ICT use provide the basis for recommendations. Potential benefits of increased ICT engagement include cost-effectiveness and improved access to resources and support. Potential limitations include poor assessment and information quality, limited practitioner support when needed, problems with distance intervention and social media, confidentiality of client records, inequality of access, inadequate competencies, and poor implementation. Specific practitioner roles are identified, and those related to social med…

Correlations between Reading Disabilities and Learning Disabilities

2015

The article is devoted to reveal correlations between reading disabilities and learning disabilities. These problems need to be explained and teachers need to have reasonable solutions. Number of school-children with learning disabilities is increasing and teacher is not able to find the best and most precise ways of diagnostics and treatment/intervention. Causes of learning disabilities are different: brain damage or distorted functioning of it; auditory or visual perception and operating problems; language acquisition or processing problems etc. Symptoms are mostly noticed in the main areas – reading, writing and mathematics. Reading disabilities are one of the most obvious and serious pr…

Vocabulary Gains of Mono- and Multilingual Learners in a Linguistically Diverse Setting: Results From a German-English Intervention With Inclusion of…

2018

Today, group settings (e.g., in kindergarten) are more linguistically-diverse than ever. However, concepts in language acquisition only rarely include this fact. This paper reports on the effects of a language intervention which is based on a concept specifically designed for linguistically-diverse settings („PROgramme for BI- and MUltilingual Children“; Festman and Rinker, 2014). The implementation of the programme and its outcomes are described with the example of a German-English-immersion kindergarten, which was in fact plurilingual. We aimed at supporting children’s acquisition of the two languages in parallel with inclusion of their home languages. Overall, 52 (mono-, bi-, and triling…

Parent-Implemented Hanen Program It Takes Two to Talk®: An Exploratory Study in Spain

2021

Parent-implemented interventions are a highly common approach for enhancing communication and linguistic abilities of late talkers, involving a population that shows a small expressive vocabulary in the absence of other deficits that could explain it. This study aimed to compare the outcomes of a parent-implemented language intervention, It Takes Two to Talk®—The Hanen Program® for Parents (ITTT), to a clinician-directed therapy. Participants were 17 families and their late-talking children: 10 families took part in ITTT and 7 in the clinician-directed modality. The outcomes in the social communication domain were more favorable for the ITTT group, but there were no significant differences …

“My dad got depression, or something”: How do children talk about parental mental disorder?

2012

The research about children affected by parents with mental disorders has suggested that information and an understanding of the parent's problems are important factors in the child's resilience. Therefore, increasing the child's understanding has been defined as a key element in many preventive interventions. However, there is little research about children's conceptions of parental mental disorder. The article examines the discourses (vocabularies) that children use as their resources when talking about a parent's mental disorder during a qualitative research interview. It pays special attention to the interviewer-child interaction. The data come from interviews with ten Finnish children.…

The waiting time for prostate cancer treatment in Italy: analysis from the PROS-IT CNR Study.

2022

Background Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second most common neoplasm in male patients. To date, there's no certain indication about the maximum waiting time (WT) acceptable for treatment beginning and the impact on oncological and functional outcomes has not been well established. Methods Data from the National Research Council PCa monitoring multicenter project in Italy (Pros-IT CNR) were prospectively collected and analyzed. WT was defined as the time from the bioptical diagnosis of PCa to the first treatment received. Patients were divided in two groups, using a time frame of 90 days. Quality of life was measured through the Italian version of the University of California Los Angeles-Pros…

Camminare e progettare territori marginali

2020

The paper aims to provide a report of the investigation and design activities which were carried out in the Apennine ridge of Umbria in collaboration with the Landscape Design department of the Vienna Polytechnic. The research found concrete realization in some landscape interventions and aspired to indicate different perspectives on landscape exploration practices in marginal and peripheral contexts. The contribution will focus both on the didactic experience of walking through the landscape and on the report of the project results. Walking is seen here as a perceptive and creative act, as a fluid practice that helps to recognize the characteristics of a territory and to enhance them throu…

Landfill Culture: Some Implications to Degrowth

2016

To some extent, waste is just one more sign of the unsustainability of growth. Waste from industrial and socio-economic metabolism must be understood as any unusable material left over after a job, function or operation has been completed, which however, retains the ability to disrupt natural systems and interfere with them as one of its inherent properties. As part of such waste, Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) represents the unusable (or underused) and rejected fraction of the material resources mobilized by the sophisticated urban and/or industrial ecosystem. Although the volume of MSW is relatively small compared to other waste types, it is increasingly important as a result of its steady r…

The Intervention of Hydrogeophysics in the Economics of Groundwater Exploitation and Management in Sicily

1989

Abstract The problem of the preservation of water resources in Sicily presents various aspects, some of which have been treated by a number of works. Among the different applied methodologies, the geophysical ones occupy an important place. Their contribution, directed to an economic and efficient exploitation and management of groundwaters, can be useful for selected “risk” areas as well as for more regional programmes. In fact, uncontrolled drillings on relatively rich aquifers occur in several zones of this island; the economically disadvantageous exploitation causes also heavy impoverishment and pollution phenomena. The fragmentation of charges and the lack of a planning Regional Body m…
