Lateral thoracic artery embolization in cystic fibrosis. A case report

2002

We report the embolization of an aberrant origin of haemoptysis - from the internal branch of the lateral thoracic artery - in a patient affected by cystic fibrosis. The technical implications for embolotheraphy in case of an aberrant origin of a haemorrhage are emphasized. Many different systemic arteries may contribute to the blood supply of the lung and many connections may exist between the systemic, bronchial and pulmonary circulations. The presence of non-bronchial systemic arteries supply should be investigated when inconclusive findings are seen during bronchial artery embolization for haemoptysis.

Executive summary of the joint position paper on renal denervation of the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe and the Eu…

2016

Renal denervation (RDN) was reported as a novel exciting treatment for resistant hypertension in 2009. An initial randomized trial supported its efficacy and the technique gained rapid acceptance across the globe. However, a subsequent large blinded, sham arm randomized trial conducted in the USA (to gain Food and Drug Administration approval) failed to achieve its primary efficacy end point in reducing office blood pressure at 6 months. Published in 2014 this trial received both widespread praise and criticism. RDN has effectively stopped out with clinical trials pending further evidence. This joint consensus document representing the European Society of Hypertension and the Cardiovascular…

Iatrogenic pulmonary lesions.

2018

Treatment of patients often includes the administration of medications and sometimes radiation. While the intent is to treat an underlying condition, in some cases, adverse effects occur due to these agents. Most of these adverse effects are mild, however, some can be severe and life-threatening. Furthermore, while these effects are often reversible upon cessation of exposure, especially if the inciting agent is recognized and withdrawn early, others might be permanent or even progressing. Most common histopathologic findings in drug-induced interstitial lung disease include nonspecific interstitial pneumonia (cellular and/or fibrotic), organizing pneumonia with or without bronchiolitis, eo…

Oral Findings in Postmenopausal Women Attending Dental Hospital in Western Part of India

2012

Objectives: To know the nature, incidence and severity of oral manifestations occurring in postmenopausal women. Study design: Oral changes were observed in 365 postmenopausal women and 365 age matched male individuals attending the department of Oral Medicine and Radiology. The patients were asked about complaints of dry mouth, taste and breath changes, mucosal and facial pain and were examined for oral changes such as ulceration, white and red lesions. The results obtained from the study were then correlated with various other similar studies. Results: The important oral findings in postmenopausal women were mucosal burning/pain (25.8%), dry mouth (27.1%), altered taste (3.6%), altered br…

Dropout from exercise randomized controlled trials among people with depression: A meta-analysis and meta regression

2015

Abstract Objective Exercise has established efficacy in improving depressive symptoms. Dropouts from randomized controlled trials (RCT’s) pose a threat to the validity of this evidence base, with dropout rates varying across studies. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the prevalence and predictors of dropout rates among adults with depression participating in exercise RCT’s. Method Three authors identified RCT’s from a recent Cochrane review and conducted updated searches of major electronic databases from 01/2013 to 08/2015. We included RCT’s of exercise interventions in people with depression (including major depressive disorder (MDD) and depressive symptoms…

Why are Cochrane hepato-biliary reviews undervalued by physicians as an aid for clinical decision-making?

2009

Abstract Background Cochrane systematic reviews are of higher quality than reviews published in scientific journals, yet are used less than other sources for clinical decision-making. Aim To assess whether the characteristics of the Cochrane systematic reviews can account for their scant use by physicians. Materials and methods We analysed the 87 Cochrane hepato-biliary reviews dealing with therapeutic topics posted in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews through December 2008, which we classified according to four characteristics: empty reviews; outdated reviews; content of reviews; implications for practice. Results Six empty reviews found no eligible randomised trials and six foun…

High blood pressure in children: clinical and health policy implications.

2010

J Clin Hypertens (Greenwich). Hypertension is a global problem, affecting both developed and developing nations. In addition to being a major cause of morbidity and mortality, hypertension places a heavy burden on health care systems, families, and society as a whole. Despite evidence of an increasing prevalence of hypertension among youth, the consequences of early onset are poorly established and often overlooked. Childhood hypertension is often asymptomatic and easily missed, even by health professionals. Target organ damage is detectable in children and adolescents, however, and hypertension continues into adulthood. Additional strategies to improve cardiovascular health among children …

I06 Dysphagia In Huntington`s Disease: A Multicenter Study

2014

Background Dysphagia is a common complication of neurogenerative disorders, and a leading cause of death due to aspiration pneumonia. Little is known about the frequency and the characteristics of dysphagia in HD. Well-balanced strategies for treatment and prevention of dysphagia in HD are lacking. Objetives To determine the prevalence of dysphagia in HD. Methods National, multicenter, observational, cross-sectional Study (Spanish EHDN). Dysphagia was assessed using the questionnaire EAT-10 (eating assessment tool), caregiver burden using the SumaCare, functional capacity using the TFC score, disease severity using the Unified HD Rating Scale (UHDRS), psyquiatric status (PBA-s), nutritional…

Predictive Factors, Management, and Clinical Outcomes of Coronary Obstruction Following Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation

2013

Objectives This study sought to evaluate the main baseline and procedural characteristics, management, and clinical outcomes of patients from a large cohort of patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) who suffered coronary obstruction (CO). Background Very little data exist on CO following TAVI. Methods This multicenter registry included 44 patients who suffered symptomatic CO following TAVI of 6,688 patients (0.66%). Pre-TAVI computed tomography data was available in 28 CO patients and in a control group of 345 patients (comparisons were performed including all patients and a cohort matched 1:1 by age, sex, previous coronary artery bypass graft, transcatheter valv…
