Laser Ultrasonics Inspection for Defect Evaluation on Train Wheel

Abstract Passengers’ safety and in-service life of wheelset axles play an important role in railway vehicles. For this reason, periodic inspections are necessary. Among non-destructive techniques, ultrasonic ones are widely applied in this field. The main disadvantage of conventional ultrasonic techniques is that the overall inspection of wheels requires the train to be put out-of-service and disassembly each part, which is time-consuming and expensive. New fine structures resolved at the ELNES Ti-L2,3 edge spectra of anatase and rutile: comparison between experiment and calculation.

Abstract Anatase and rutile Ti- L 2,3 edge spectra were measured in electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) using a transmission electron microscope (TEM) coupled to a CEOS Cs-probe corrector, an omega-type monochromator and an in-column omega-type energy filter fully corrected for 2nd order aberrations. Thanks to the high energy resolution, high electron probe current and high stability achieved under this instrumental configuration, new fine structures, never reported before, were resolved at the L 3 band of both rutile and anatase. Binocular function measures as predictors of user performance in stereoscopic augmented reality

Inconsistency between the binocular and focus cues in stereoscopic augmented reality overburdens the visual system leading to its stress. Parasitic Bipolar Action in SiC Power MOSFETs Demonstrated by Two-Photon Laser Experiment

A two-photon absorption technique is explored for Silicon carbide power MOSFETs and power junction barrier Schottky diodes using a pulsed laser. The similarities in design between the specific MOSFETs and diodes tested permit using mechanisms existing in the different structures as explanation for observed current variation with laser position. The diode shows variation in average current with change in laser depth only, whereas the MOSFET shows variation both with shifts in depth and shifts in position across the striped geometry of the device. Electromagnetic and Thermal Modelling for Calculating Ageing Rate of Distribution Transformers

Prediction of the lifetime for transformers is very important for maintenance and asset management. Finite element analysis was performed on a 5 MVA distribution transformers with aluminium foil-type windings and voltage rating 6600 V/23000 V. Electromagnetic modelling is implemented on the full three-phase transformer to calculate distributed losses, taking the skin effect into account. To reduce the computational burden, the distributed losses in one phase are used to analyse temperature rise in one phase of the transformer. Explosive crystallization in amorphous CuTi thin films: a molecular dynamics study

A review on LiNixCo1−2xMnxO2 (0.1 ≤ x ≤ 0.33) cathode materials for rechargeable Li-ion batteries

Abstract Electrochemical and physical properties of LiNixCo1−2xMnxO2 (0.1 ≤ x ≤ 0.33) electrode materials prepared by self-combustion were investigated. Pure LiNixCo1−2xMnxO2 (x = 0.1, 0.2, 0.33) materials with single phase and R-3 m layered structure were obtained as confirmed by X-ray diffraction. Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy are commonly used to determine the chemical composition and the distribution of particle size of the three samples. An anomalous wave formation at the Al/Cu interface during magnetic pulse welding

This paper reports an anomalous wave formation at an Al/Cu bimetallic interface produced by magnetic pulse welding. The mechanism of the anomalous wave formation is investigated using both metallurgical characterization and the interface kinematics. It reveals that the anomalous wave is formed with the combination of the intermediate zone and the interdiffusion zone with a thickness of 70 nm, wherein the intermediate zone is caused by the local melting due to the high shear instability, and the interdiffusion zone is formed below the melting point of aluminum combined with ultrahigh heating and cooling rates of about 10^13 °C s^−1.
