Characterization of three-dimensional microstructure of composite materials by X-ray tomography

Analysis methods for X-ray microtomographic images of short fibre composite materials were developed. The methods enable estimation of microstructural properties of the material, e.g., aspect ratio and orientation of fibres. Being based on X-ray microtomography and image analysis, the methods are nondestructive and do not require user intervention. In particular, a method for determination of the aspect ratio of fibres was first developed. The method contains an assumption about similarity of the shape of the fibres. Importance of millipedes (Diplopoda) in the autumn-winter diet of Scolopax rusticola

Authors examined the autumn-winter diet of the woodcock Scolopax rusticola from 407 gizzard samples originating from Crimea and Italy, resulting in a high number of millipedes (Diplopoda) in all the samples; this prey item was particularly important in terms of weight percentage. The authors consider that calcium, highly present in millipedes, should be an important source for the woodcocks’ metabolism during the autumn-winter seasons.

Radiation-sensitive gels are among the most recent and promising developments for radiation therapy (RT) dosimetry. RT dosimetry has the twofold goal of ensuring the quality of the treatment and the radiation protection of the patient. Benchmark dosimetry for acceptance testing and commissioning of RT systems is still based on ionization chambers. Tässä laadullisessa tutkimuksessa tarkasteltiin organisaatioiden yhdistymisen mukanaan tuomia mainemuutoksia uusille organisaatioille. Tutkimuskohteena oli kaksi julkisen sektorin tapausorganisaatiota, Terveyden ja hyvinvoinnin laitos (KTL + Stakes) ja Valvira (TEO + STTV). Tutkimuksessa pyrittiin selvittämään, mistä tekijöistä koostuu organisaatiomuutoksen kautta yhdistyneen uuden organisaation maine ja miten vanha maine heijastuu uuden organisaation maineeseen. Tässä tutkimuksessa tarkasteltiin yliopistotyöntekijöiden yliopistomuutoksen toteutukseen suhtautumista, itseen liittyviä ydintulkintoja ja tarmokkuutta sekä näiden välisiä yhteyksiä vuoden seurannan aikana. Perhemuodon ja sisarusaseman yhteys lapsen sosiaaliseen suosituimmuuteen ja näkyvyyteen ensimmäisellä luokalla

Tutkimuksessa tarkasteltiin perhemuodon, sisaruuden ja syntymäjärjestyksen yhteyttä lapsen saamaan hyväksyntään ikätovereiden keskuudessa ensimmäisellä luokalla. Tutkittavina oli 154 keskisuomalaista lasta yhdeksältä luokalta. Lapsen sosiaalista suosituimmuutta ja näkyvyyttä arvioitiin ensimmäisen luokan keväällä pyytämällä lapsia mainitsemaan luokkatovereita, joiden kanssa he viettävät mielellään aikaansa ja joiden kanssa he vastaavasti eivät mielellään vietä aikaansa. Perhetaustasta kerättiin tietoa vanhemmilta kyselylomakkeella lasten ollessa esikoulussa.
