Perfomance of Ultra-Wideband OFDM Systems Using Adaptive MPSK Modulation over Nakagami-m Channels

2006

The physical layer proposal of the Multiband OFDM (MB-OFDM) Alliance to the TG3a Working Group of IEEE802.15 for ultra wideband (UWB) systems defines the use of a fixed QPSK modulation scheme in all subcarriers corresponding to 14 subbands of this proposal. In this paper, an adaptive MPSK digital modulation scheme has been proposed to improve the average capacity expressed in bits/symbol for the MB-OFDM. The channel fading has been modeled Nakagami-m distributed and the power delay profile (PDP) is assumed exponential. This average capacity has been evaluated for many channel conditions as a function of the average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the fading parameter of the Nakagami-m distr…

Performance and Delay Analysis of Hybrid ARQ With Incremental Redundancy Over Double Rayleigh Fading Channels

2014

In this paper, we study the performance of hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) with incremental redundancy over double Rayleigh channels, a common model for the fading amplitude of vehicle-to-vehicle communication systems. We inves- tigate the performance of HARQ from an information theoretic perspective. Analytical expressions are derived for the -outage capacity, the average number of transmissions, and the average transmission rate of HARQ with incremental redundancy assum- ing a maximum number of HARQ rounds. Moreover, we evaluate the delay experienced by Poisson arriving packets for HARQ with incremental redundancy. We provide analytical expressions for the expected waiting time, th…

RF-Based Human Activity Recognition: A Non-stationary Channel Model Incorporating the Impact of Phase Distortions

2019

This paper proposes a non-stationary channel model that captures the impact of the time-variant (TV) phase distortion caused by hardware imperfections. The model allows for studying the spectrogram of in-home radio channels influenced by walking activities of the home user under realistic non-stationary propagation conditions. The resolution of the spectrogram is investigated for the von-Mises distribution of the phase distortion. It is shown that high-entropy distributions considerably mask fingerprints of the user activity on the spectrogram of the channel. For an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) system, a computationally simple method for mitigating the undesired phase r…

SINR analysis of OFDM systems using a geometry-based underwater acoustic channel model

2015

The Doppler effect is caused by the relative movement between the transmitter (Tx) and the receiver (Rx) and/or the surface motion (waves) in underwater acoustic (UWA) communication systems. The inter-channel interference (ICI) caused by the Doppler effect degrades the performance of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems over UWA channels. This paper is devoted to the ICI plus noise analysis of UWA-OFDM systems over a geometry-based channel model for shallow UWA channels. We carry out the exact calculation of the ICI power, ambient noise power, and required transmit power, as well as their effects on the performance of UWA-OFDM systems. The signal-to-interference ratio (…

Dynamic Spectrum Reservation for CR Networks in the Presence of Channel Failures: Channel Allocation and Reliability Analysis

2018

[EN] Providing channel access opportunities for new service requests and guaranteeing continuous connections for ongoing flows until service completion are two challenges for service provisioning in wireless networks. Channel failures, which are typically caused by hardware and software failures or/and by intrinsic instability in radio transmissions, can easily result in network performance degradation. In cognitive radio networks (CRNs), secondary transmissions are inherently vulnerable to connection breaks due to licensed users' arrivals as well as channel failures. To explore the advantages of channel reservation on performance improvement in error-prone channels, we propose and analyze …

Modeling, analysis, and simulation of MIMO mobile-to-mobile fading channels

2008

This paper' deals with the modeling, analysis, and simulation of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) narrowband fading channels for mobile-to-mobile communications. A stochastic MIMO mobile-to-mobile reference channel model is derived from the geometrical two-ring scattering model under the assumption that both the transmitter and the receiver are surrounded by an infinite number of local scatterers. Using a wave propagation model, the complex channel gains are derived and their statistical properties are studied. General analytical solutions are provided for the three-dimensional (3-D) space-time cross-correlation function (CCF). We show that this function can be expressed as the product…

Modelling of Non-WSSUS Channels with Time-Variant Doppler and Delay Characteristics

2018

This paper deals with the modelling of non-wide-sense stationary uncorrelated scattering (non-WSSUS) channels in which the angles of arrival (AOAs), Doppler frequencies, and propagation delays vary with time. Starting from a geometrical model in which the mobile station (MS) travels along a predefined path with time-variant velocity, it is shown how the parameters of the non-WSSUS model can be computed analytically assuming that the scatterers are fixed. One of the key results of our analysis is that the time-variant Doppler frequencies and the time-variant propagation delays of WSSUS and non-WSSUS channels are connected by a fundamental relationship. Furthermore, the time-variant channel t…

Spectrogram analysis of multipath fading channels

2015

The analysis of the Doppler power spectral density (PSD) of measured and simulated data is an important topic in the area of mobile radio channel modelling. In this paper, we estimate the Doppler PSD of multipath fading channels by using the concept of the spectrogram. The spectrogram is a spectral representation that gives insight into how the distribution of the spectral density of a signal changes over time. The multipath fading channel is modelled by a sum-of-cisoids (SOC) process. A closed-form solution is presented for the spectrogram and the corresponding time-dependent autocorrelation function (ACF). The closed-form solutions disclose several unwanted effects that come with the limi…

An adaptive cooperative MAC mechanism in multi-hop wireless networks

2010

In this paper, we propose a novel adaptive cooperative MAC mechanism that is specifically designed for two-hop cooperative communications where source and destination cannot hear each other directly. The proposed scheme employs an efficient adaptive relay selection algorithm such that the number of relay nodes is optimized for each cooperative transmission to maximize cooperation benefits and effectively avoid potential collisions with other transmissions. In order to determine the optimal number of relays we apply a training sequence in Hello message exchange, which provides us with a channel status indicator combining both bit-level and flow-level information. Numerical results show that …

A contention-based multiple access protocol in cooperative wireless networks

2010

Cooperative communication has emerged as a promising technique to enhance system performance in wireless networks. This paper proposes a contention-based cooperative multiple medium access control protocol by means of multiple retransmissions of the same packet from different relay nodes. The proposed scheme exploits cooperative communication capability not only from time diversity derived from multiple temporal transmissions but also spatial diversity derived from distributed multiple relays. A Markov chain is introduced to analyze the throughput performance of the proposed cooperative scheme. The performance evaluation of the protocol is validated and compared with non-cooperative ARQ pro…
