Simulation of H- ion source extraction systems for the Spallation Neutron Source with Ion Beam Simulator.
2012
A three-dimensional ion optical code IBSimu, which is being developed at the University of Jyväskylä, features positive and negative ion plasma extraction models and self-consistent space charge calculation. The code has been utilized for modeling the existing extraction system of the H(-) ion source of the Spallation Neutron Source. Simulation results are in good agreement with experimental data. A high-current extraction system with downstream electron dumping at intermediate energy has been designed. According to the simulations it provides lower emittance compared to the baseline system at H(-) currents exceeding 40 mA. A magnetic low energy beam transport section consisting of two sole…
Time profile of ion pulses produced in a hot-cavity laser ion source.
2010
The time spreads of Mn ions produced by three-photon resonant ionization in a hot-cavity laser ion source are measured. A one-dimensional ion-transport model is developed to simulate the observed ion time structures. Assuming ions are generated with a Maxwellian velocity distribution and are guided by an axial electric field, the predictions of the model agree reasonably well with the experimental data and suggest that the ions are radially confined in the ion source and a substantial fraction of the ions in the transport tube are extracted.
Efficiency of an on-line isotope separator system employing cooled and NaCl-loaded He-jet methods
1976
Abstract A pure helium-jet at liquid nitrogen temperature coupled to a Nielsen type ion source, and a NaCl-loaded helium-jet coupled to a hollow-cathode ion source have been investigated as means to connect a cyclotron target chamber on-line to a mass separator. Technical details and performances of some critical parts of the system are described. Total separation efficiencies measured under various experimental conditions for several nuclides vary between 0.01 and 1.0%.
Investigation of gaseous discharge ion sources for isotope separation on-line
1976
Abstract Gaseous discharge ion sources with circular end extraction have been investigated with the aim of meeting the special requirements of on-line isotope separation. The studies represent an attempt to increase lifetime, temperature and ionization efficiency of the ion source under stable discharge conditions and to reduce the ion current density of usually 1–100 mA/cm2 of low intensity separator sources. The detailed investigation of a modified Nielsen Ion Source is described. The source yields in oscillating electron are operation reproducible ionization efficiencies of 32% for krypton and 45% for xenon. It was found that minor variations of geometry and potentials in a Nielsen-type …
The CERN/ISOLDE Laser Ion Source
2017
Laser resonance photo-ionization an essential aspect of radioactive ion beam production for fundamental and applied physics research. The laser ion source of the ISOLDE facility, described here, is the most versatile of its type worldwide.
Multi-color resonance ionization of laser ablated gadolinium at high laser power
2005
Abstract Spectroscopic and analytical properties of a trace analytical method using multi-step resonance ionization at high laser intensities (>kW/cm 2 ) have been investigated with gadolinium as a test element. Strongly saturated transitions are observed, which have been used for a temperature determination of the atoms in the laser ablated plume. Regimes of multi-step resonance ionization and multiphoton ionization could be distinguished. Analytical performances due to resonance enhancement and resulting discrimination against non-resonant background, precision in isotope ratio determination and overall detection efficiency are discussed.
Investigation of ISIS and Brookhaven National Laboratory ion source electrodes after extended operation.
2012
Linac4 accelerator of Centre Européen de Recherches Nucléaires is under construction and a RFdriven H− ion source is being developed. The beam current requirement for Linac4 is very challenging: 80 mA must be provided. Cesiated plasma discharge ion sources such as Penning or magnetron sources are also potential candidates. Accelerator ion sources must achieve typical reliability figures of 95% and above. Investigating and understanding the underlying mechanisms involved with source failure or ageing is critical when selecting the ion source technology. Plasma discharge driven surface ion sources rely on molybdenum cathodes. Deformation of the cathode surfaces is visible after extended opera…
Study of short-lived tin isotopes with a laser ion source
1995
A chemically selective laser ion source based on resonance ionization of atoms in a hot cavity has been applied for the study of short-lived silver isotopes at CERN/ ISOLDE. Silver atoms were ionized by two resonant excitations and final laser ionization into the continuum. Decay properties of the neutron-rich isotopes121–127Ag were studied with a neutron long-counter and aβ-detector.
SAXS/WAXS study of the annealing process in quenched samples of isotactic poly(propylene)
1999
The structural rearrangement in samples of quenched isotactic poly(propylene) (iPP) submitted to different annealing treatments has been studied using simultaneous small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS) at the synchrotron radiation source of DESY, Hamburg. From a quantitative analysis of the WAXS profiles the values of the α-monoclinic, mesomorphic, and amorphous mass fractions coexisting in the material were determined. It is demonstrated that the SAXS patterns were characterized by two different long-period values that are attributed to α- and mesomorphic periodicity, respectively. The related α- and mesomorphic volume phase fractions, calculated from the analysis of the SAXS …
High current proton source based on ECR discharge sustained by 37.5 GHz gyrotron radiation
2012
Formation of hydrogen ion beams with high intensity and low transverse emittance is one of the key challenges in accelerator technology. Present work is devoted to experimental investigation of proton beam production from dense plasma (Ne > 1013 cm−3) of an ECR discharge sustained by 37.5 GHz, 100 kW gyrotron radiation at SMIS 37 facility at IAP RAS. The anticipated advantages of the SMIS 37 gasdynamic ion source over the current state-of-the-art proton source technology based on 2.45 GHz hydrogen discharges are described. Experimental result obtained with different extraction configurations i.e. single- and multi-aperture systems are presented. It was demonstrated that ultra bright proton …
