ChemInform Abstract: Di- and Tricationic Organic Salts: An Overview of Their Properties and Applications

2014

During recent years growing interest has been devoted to the synthesis and applications of polycationic organic salts. Among them, di- and tricationic organic salts can be considered the natural evolution of monocationic ones. These last have given rise to the large class of ionic liquids. In the cases of di- and tricationic organic salts, the potential to change their structural features simply by varying the properties either of the charged heads or of the spacers separating them provides the opportunity to obtain materials suitable for different applications. This review article highlights recent progress in the study of the properties of di- and tricationic organic salts, as well as in …

Influence of Some Ionic Liquids Containing the Trifluoromethanesulfonate Anion on the Vapor–Liquid Equilibria of the Acetone + Methanol System

2011

Isobaric vapor–liquid equilibria (VLE) for the binary systems acetone + 1-butyl-3-ethylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate ([beim][triflate]), methanol + [beim][triflate], acetone + 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium trifluoromethanesulfonate ([bmpyr][triflate]), and methanol + [bmpyr][triflate] as well as the VLE for the acetone + methanol + [beim][triflate] and acetone + methanol + [bmpyr][triflate] ternary systems have been obtained at 100 kPa using a recirculating still. The addition of both ionic liquids to the solvent mixtures produced an important salting-out effect, and the azeotrope tended to disappear for small amounts of ionic liquid. The experimental binary data sets were independe…

Carbon Nanomaterial Doped Ionic Liquid Gels for the Removal of Pharmaceutically Active Compounds from Water.

2019

Due to large drug consumption, pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) can be found as water contaminants. The removal of PhACs is a significant issue, as they can easily overtake traditional purification methods. Because of their surface properties, carbon nanomaterials are among the most efficient materials able to adsorb PhACs. However, their limitation is their recovery after use and their possible leakage into the aquatic system. Consequently, new hybrid supramolecular ionic liquid gels (HILGs) have been designed for the adsorption of some antibiotic drugs (ciprofloxacin and nalidixic acid) from water. The chemical&ndash

Extent of the influence of phosphate buffer and ionic liquids on the reduction of the silanol effect in a C18 stationary phase

2017

The presence of anionic free silanols in the silica-based stationary phases gives rise to broad and asymmetrical peaks when cationic basic compounds are chromatographed using hydro-organic mobile phases. The addition to the mobile phase of a reagent with ionic character prevents the access of analytes to the free silanols, improving the peak shape. The silanol activity can be affected by the buffer concentration and mobile phase pH, factors that are not always considered sufficiently in the literature. In this work, the chromatographic behaviour of three basic β-adrenoceptor antagonists (acebutolol, nadolol and timolol), using mobile phases containing acetonitrile, was examined at different…

Molecular association of small amphiphiles: Origin of ionic liquid properties in dibutyl phosphate/propylamine binary mixtures

2018

Abstract Binary mixtures of liquid surfactants, owing to the amphiphilic nature of the molecules involved, can exhibit nano-segregation and peculiar transport properties. The amphiphilicity, and consequently the resulting self-assembly, can be tuned by changing the length of the alkyl chains and the nature of the polar head group. So, in the present study, the structural and dynamic properties of dibutyl phosphate/propylamine liquid mixtures at various compositions have been investigated by Wide Angle X-ray Scattering (WAXS), FT-IR, rheometry and dielectric spectroscopy in order to study the intermolecular association taking place when alkylphosphates and alkylamines with a small apolar par…

Evidences of release and catch mechanism in the Heck reaction catalyzed by palladium immobilized on highly cross-linked-supported imidazolium salts

2014

Abstract Palladium (10 wt%) on a highly cross-linked imidazolium-based material was used as catalyst in 0.1 mol% in the Heck reaction between several alkenes and aryl iodides. Products were obtained from good to high yields. Deeper investigations showed a release of Pd species in solution and their capture by the imidazolium-based support. When a sixfold amount of support was employed the re-captured Pd species (0.5–0.6 wt%) were not anymore catalytically active. This result represents a new interesting aspect of this work since the highly cross-linked imidazolium-based material can act also as Pd scavenger avoiding the release of the metal in solution. Important differences between Heck an…

Oxadiazolyl-Pyridinium as Cationic Scaffold for Fluorinated Ionic Liquid Crystals

2021

The synthesis and characterization of a new class of 1,2,4-oxadiazolylpyridinium as a cationic scaffold for fluorinated ionic liquid crystals is herein described. A series of 12 fluorinated heterocyclic salts based on a 1,2,4-oxadiazole moiety, connected through its C(5) or C(3) to an N-alkylpyridinium unit and a perfluoroheptyl chain, differing in the length of the alkyl chain and counterions, has been synthesized. As counterions iodide, bromide and bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide have been considered. The synthesis, structure, and liquid crystalline properties of these compounds are discussed on the basis of the tuned structural variables. The thermotropic properties of this series of sa…
