Mesoscopic organization in ionic liquids.
2017
We discuss some published results and provide new observations concerning the high level of structural complexity that lies behind the nanoscale correlations in ionic liquids (ILs) and their mixtures with molecular liquids. It turns out that this organization is a consequence of the hierarchical construction on both spatial (from ångström to several nanometer) and temporal (from fraction of picosecond to hundreds of nanosecond) scales, which requires joint use of experimental and computational tools. © 2017, Springer International Publishing Switzerland.
Anomalous and Not-So-Common Behavior in Common Ionic Liquids and Ionic Liquid-Containing Systems
2019
This work highlights unexpected, not so well known responses of ionic liquids and ionic liquid-containing systems, which are reported in a collective manner, as a short review. Examples include: (i) Minima in the temperature dependence of the isobaric thermal expansion coefficient of some ILs; (ii) Viscosity Minima in binary mixtures of IL + Molecular solvents; (iii) Anomalies in the surface tension within a family of ILs; (iv) The constancy among IL substitution of Cp/Vm at and around room temperature; (v) ILs as glass forming liquids; (vi) Alternate odd-even side alkyl chain length effects; (vii) Absolute negative pressures in ILs and IL-containing systems; (viii) Reversed-charged ionic l…

Covalently Supported Imidazolium Salts In Catalysis
2020
Synthesis and catalytic applications of supported imidazolium salts covalently linked to the proper support are described. As supports here we report, among others, the use of amorphous and mesoporous silica, polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes, magnetic-based silica, polystyrenes, halloysite nanotubes, carbon nanoforms such as fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, carbon nanohorns, graphene. The catalytic applications have been divided into two main sections, metal-free based and metal-based reactions.
Mesoscopic structural organization in triphilic room temperature ionic liquids
2013
Room temperature ionic liquids are one of the most exciting classes of materials in the last decade. The interest for these low melting, ionic compounds stems from both their technological impact and the stimulating plethora of structural and dynamic peculiarities in the mesoscopic space-time scales. It is nowadays well-established that they are characterised by an enhanced degree of mesoscopic order originating from their inherent amphiphilicity. In this contribution we highlight the existence of a further degree of mesoscopic complexity when dealing with RTILs bearing a medium length fluorous tail: such triphilic materials (they simultaneously contain polar, hydrophobic and fluorophilic m…

N-heterocyclic carbenes and parent cations: acidity, nucleophilicity, stability, and hydrogen bonding-Electrochemical Study and ab initio calculations
2016
N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are widely used as organocatalysts. Their reactivity (and instability) is related to their basicity and nucleophilicity, which, in turn, are linked to their scaffold. NHCs can be generated by chemical deprotonation or electrochemical reduction of the parent azolium cations, NHCH+s. Cyclic voltammetry enabled the reduction potential of the NHCH+s to be determined; the reduction potential is related to the acidity of the NHCH+s and the oxidation potential of the NHCs, which is related to the nucleophilicity of the NHCs. It was thus possible to order different NHCH+s and NHCs by their acidity and nucleophilicity, respectively. A study on the stability of NHCs was…
