In this work, an analysis of the parametric sensitivity of the overshoot in the concentration of the adsorbate in the adsorbed phase, which occurs under certain conditions during an ion-exchange adsorption process, is presented and used to suggest practical implications of the concentration overshoot phenomenon on operational policies and configurations of chromatographic columns and finite bath adsorption systems. Thermal behaviour and electrochemical properties of bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide and dodecatungstosilicate viologen dimers

We report the synthesis and characterization of dimeric viologen salts (1',1''-(alkane-1,n-diyl)bis(1-ethyl-4,4'-bipyridinium) with n = 4-10) with bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide (bistriflimide, Tf(2)N(-)) as a counteranion. For n = 4, 5 and 6, and for the nonylviologen cation (1,1'-dinonyl-4,4'-bipyridinium) we also prepared salts with the totally inorganic dodecatungstosilicate anion, SiW(12)O(40)(4-), featuring a poly-charged surface and nanosized dimensions. Incorporation of Pd nanoparticles in mesostructured silica

Monodisperse Pd nanoparticles were prepared by controlled reduction in organic phase and subsequent transfer to aqueous phase. A systematic study was carried out to finely tune nanoparticle size and optimize particle size distribution. The use of 4-dimethylaminopyridine as a transfer agent allowed for the easy and quantitative extraction of the Pd to the aqueous phase. The quaternary amine-functionalized metal nanoparticles were then used as metallic micelle replicas to grow silica around them. Operational Mechanism of Conjugated Polyelectrolytes

Conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs) are versatile materials used in a range of organic optoelectronic applications. Because of their ionic/electronic nature, characterizing these materials is nontrivial, and their operational mechanism is not fully understood. In this work we use a methodology that combines constant-voltage-driven current-density transient measurements with fast current vs voltage scans to allow decoupling of ionic and electronic phenomena. This technique is applied to diodes prepared with cationic CPEs having different charge-compensating anions. Synergistic effect of ligating and ionic functions, prearranged on a calix[4]arene.

The covalent attachment of two CMPO-functions and two anionic Cosan groups to the narrow rim of tert-butylcalix[4]arene leads to a dramatic increase of the extraction efficiency for the cone isomer; Am(3+) is removed from 5 x 10(-8) M solution to more than 99% by a single extraction step with a 3 x 10(-6) M solution of the calixarene.

Electrochemical capacitance spectroscopy and capacitive relaxation of the changeover process in iron hexacyanoferrate molecular compound

Abstract In this work it was proposed the use electrochemical capacitance spectroscopy (ECS) to evaluate the storage process during changeover in FeHCF compound. The approach is equivalent to electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) albeit from such analysis it was possible to focus attention on the capacitive and dielectric relaxation instead of the dispersive relaxation related to charge transfer. Effect of cationic polyamidoamine dendrimers on ionic transport through nanochannels

Abstract The effect of polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers (generations G0–G3) on the ion transport properties of nanochannels (conical and cylindrical) is studied either by surface functionalization or by addition to the electrolyte solution. Surface functionalization with cationic dendrimers lead to inversion of the ion current rectification, indicating the anion selectivity of the modified nanochannels. This anion selectivity increases by immobilizing higher-generation dendrimers, as expected for an increase in the surface density of amino groups. Recent advances in light-emitting electrochemical cells

Light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) are solution-processable thin-film electroluminescent devices consisting of a luminescent material in an ionic environment. The simplest type of LEC is based on only one material, ionic transition-metal complexes (iTMCs). These materials are of interest for different scientific fields such as chemistry, physics, and technology as selected chemical modifications of iTMCs resulted in crucial breakthroughs for the performance of LECs. This short review highlights the different strategies used to design these compounds with the aim to enhance the performances of LECs.

Photochemical window mechanism for controlled atom release in carborane endohedral boxes: Theoretical evidence

Abstract On the basis of high-level quantum chemical calculations, closed-cage carboranes are shown to be prospective nanoscale mass selective conveyors via a photochemical switch. A mechanism is evidenced in which stable carborane boxes with lithium as endohedral atom, Li@CB 11 H 12 , can be photoinduced to sequentially evolve opening the cage, releasing the internal atom through a window in the box structure, and closing the cage toward either ionic or neutral channels where the charge or spin of the fragments may be controlled.

The uptake and release kinetics of134Cs by Goldfish (Carassius auratus) and137Cs by Zebra Fish (Brachydanio rerio) from aquatic media of different ionic compositions and temperature was studied in controlled laboratory conditions. The accumulation of radiocesium in the case ofBrachydanio rerio is observed to be strongly dependent on the potassium ion concentration of the aquatic medium, but in the case ofCarassius auratus this dependence is quite weak. The biological half-lives of the cesium isotopes incorporated into the fish investigated in the present work vary from 19 to 80 days and are influenced by the temperature and the ionic composition of the aquatic medium.
