Anion-driven encapsulation of cationic guests inside pyridine[4]arene dimers

Pyridine[4]arenes have previously been considered as anion binding hosts due to the electron-poor nature of the pyridine ring. Herein, we demonstrate the encapsulation of Me4N+ cations inside a dimeric hydrogen-bonded pyridine[4]arene capsule, which contradicts with earlier assumptions. The complexation of a cationic guest inside the pyridine[4]arene dimer has been detected and studied by multiple gas-phase techniques, ESI-QTOF-MS, IRMPD, and DT-IMMS experiments, as well as DFT calculations. Dithionite bleaching of thermomechanical pulp: factors having effects on bleaching efficiency

The efficiency of dithionite bleaching of Norway spruce (Picea abies) thermomechanical pulp was studied by applying various multivariate data analysis techniques to analytical data (temperature, pH, ion chromatographic and energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence data). In addition, modeling the residual sulfur content of bleached pulp by means of diffuse reflectance UV-vis spectral data from laboratory-scale bleaching experiments was attempted. The results indicated that this lignin-preserving bleaching process could be evaluated by means of the analytical data using either PCR or PLS models. Ferricytochrome c encapsulated in silica nanoparticles: structural stability and functional properties.

Using a modified sol-gel technique, we have succeeded in encapsulating ferric cytochrome c in silica nanoparticles obtained from hydrolysis and polycondensation of tetramethylorthosilicate. Particles dimensions have been determined with dynamic light scattering; this technique yields an hydrodynamic radius of about 100 nm, each nanoparticle containing about 10(2)-10(3) proteins. If stored in the cold at low ionic strength, nanoparticles are stable for more than one week, even if a slow radius increase with time is observed. Global and local interactions in football : the changing field of professional football stadiums in Finland and Hungary in the 2000s

This article aims to increase understanding of the global-local contexts in football by exploring the changing field of professional football stadiums in Finland and Hungary in the 2000s. More specifically, the cases of two clubs, HJK (Finland) and Ferencvárosi TC (Hungary) are studied. We employ concepts of sport and globalization. The research data consist of semi-structured expert interviews with Finnish and Hungarian football practitioners, media and club documents, and data from observation. A multicommuted flow system with solenoid micro-pumps for paraquat determination in natural waters.

A flow system designed with solenoid micro-pumps is proposed for the determination of paraquat in natural waters. The procedure involves the reaction of paraquat with dehydroascorbic acid followed by spectrophotometric measurements. A crystalline radical cation derived from Thiele’s hydrocarbon with redox range beyond 1 V

Thiele’s hydrocarbon occupies a central role as an open-shell platform for new organic materials, however little is known about its redox behaviour. While recent synthetic approaches involving symmetrical carbene substitution of the CPh2 termini yield isolable neutral/dicationic analogues, the intervening radical cations are much more difficult to isolate, due to narrow compatible redox ranges (typically  1 V), permitting its isolation in crystalline form. Isolation and partial characterization of a cytochrome-o complex from chromatophores of the photosynthetic bacterium Rhodospirillum rubrum FR1.

A cytochrome-o complex was isolated from chromatophores of photoheterotrophically grown Rhodospirillum rubrum FR1. The enzyme was extracted with the non-denaturating detergent taurodeoxycholate and subsequently purified by sucrose-density-gradient centrifugation and gel-permeation HPLC. The complex contains two types of cytochromes, one of them cytochrome o, and two copper atoms. It catalyzes the reduction of molecular oxygen, when N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-p-phenylenediamine or ubiquinol 10 are offered as electron donors. Measurement of ionization, charge exchange and ion confinement times in charge breeder ECR ion sources with short pulse 1+ injection of metal ions

Abstract The Consecutive Transients (CT) method is used for estimating the characteristic times of ionization, charge exchange and confinement within the plasma of a Charge Breeder Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source (CB-ECRIS). The method reveals differences in the characteristic times between different source configurations, with K9+ charge breeding efficiencies of 8.9 % and 20.4 %, and allows qualitative explanation of the improved breeding efficiency.
