Ionization of Rydberg atoms by blackbody radiation

2008

We have studied an ionization of alkali-metal Rydberg atoms by blackbody radiation (BBR). The results of the theoretical calculations of ionization rates of Li, Na, K, Rb and Cs Rydberg atoms are presented. Calculations have been performed for nS, nP and nD states which are commonly used in a variety of experiments, at principal quantum numbers n=8-65 and at the three ambient temperatures of 77, 300 and 600 K. A peculiarity of our calculations is that we take into account the contributions of BBR-induced redistribution of population between Rydberg states prior to photoionization and field ionization by extraction electric field pulses. The obtained results show that these phenomena affect …

Nonlinear effects in optical pumping of a cold and slow atomic beam

2015

By photoionizing hyperfine (HF) levels of the Cs state $6{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}^{2}{P}_{3/2}$ in a slow and cold atom beam, we find how their population depends on the excitation laser power. The long time (around $180\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{s})$ spent by the slow atoms inside the resonant laser beam is large enough to enable exploration of a unique atom-light interaction regime heavily affected by time-dependent optical pumping. We demonstrate that, under such conditions, the onset of nonlinear effects in the population dynamics and optical pumping occurs at excitation laser intensities much smaller than the conventional respective saturation values. The ev…

Laser-stimulated two-step recombination of highly charged ions and electrons in a storage ring

1994

Two-step resonant laser-stimulated recombination of highly charged ions was performed for the first time. Nd:YAG laser pulses overlapped with an Ar[sup 18+] beam in the electron cooler of the ESR storage ring at GSI induced transitions from the continuum to the [ital n]=81 state of hydrogenlike Ar[sup 17+]. To avoid reionization in the bending magnet before reaching the detector, the [ital n]=81 population was transferred to a state well below the reionization threshold by a Ti:sapphire laser. Tuning of this laser yielded the [ital n]=81 to 36 and 37 transition-line profiles. The two-step method provides access to detailed Rydberg spectroscopy in an electron beam environment.

Collisional and thermal ionization of sodium Rydberg atoms: II. Theory fornS,nP andnD states withn= 5–25

2005

A stochastic model of associative ionization in collisions of Rydberg atoms with ground-state atoms is presented. The conventional Duman–Shmatov–Mihajlov–Janev (DSMJ) model treats the ionization as excitation of Rydberg electron to the continuum by the electric-dipole field generated by exchange interaction within the quasi-molecular ion. The stochastic model essentially extends this treatment by taking into account redistribution of population over a range of Rydberg states prior to ionization, which is caused by non-adiabatic processes in overlapping multiple level crossings of quasi-molecular Rydberg states. The redistribution is modelled as diffusion of electrons in the Rydberg energy s…

A Complex Environment around Circinus X-1

2007

We present the results of an archival 54 ks long Chandra observation of the peculiar source Cir X-1 during the phase passage 0.223-0.261. We focus on the study of detected emission and absorption features using the HETGS. A comparative analysis of X-ray spectra, selected at different flux levels of the source, allows us to distinguish between a very hard state, at a low count rate, and a brighter, softer, highly absorbed spectrum during episodes of flaring activity. The spectrum of the hard state clearly shows emission lines of highly ionized elements, while, during the flaring state, the spectrum also shows strong resonant absorption lines. The most intense and interesting feature in this …

Development of High Resolution Resonance Ionization Mass Spectrometry for Neutron Dosimetry Technique with93Nb(n,n')93mNb Reaction

2016

We have proposed an advanced technique to measure the 93mNb yield precisely by Resonance Ionization Mass Spectrometry, instead of conventional characteristic X-ray spectroscopy. 93mNb-selective resonance ionization is achievable by distinguishing the hyperfine splitting of the atomic energy levels between 93Nb and 93mNb at high resolution. In advance of 93mNb detection, we could successfully demonstrate high resolution resonant ionization spectroscopy of stable 93Nb using an all solid-state, narrowband and tunable Ti:Sapphire laser system operated at 1 kHz repetition rate. peerReviewed

A two-dimensional liquid-filled ionization chamber array prototype for small-field verification: characterization and first clinical tests.

2012

In this work we present the design, characterization and first clinical tests of an in-house developed two-dimensional liquid-filled ionization chamber prototype for the verification of small radiotherapy fields and treatments containing such small fields as in radiosurgery, which consists of 2 mm × 2 mm pixels arranged on a 16×8 rectangular grid. The ionization medium is isooctane. The characterization of the device included the study of depth, field-size and dose-rate dependences, which are sufficiently moderate for a good operation at therapy radiation levels. However, the detector presents an important anisotropic response, up to ≃ 12% for front versus near-lateral incidence, which can …

Relativistically Smeared Iron Lines in the Spectra of Bright NS LMXB

2009

We present preliminary results of a study on three bright accreting low-mass X-ray binaries hosting a neutron star, based on XMM-Newton observations. These sources (GX 340+0, GX 349+2 and SAX J1808.4-3658) show a broad Fe K alpha iron line in their spectra. This feature can be well described by relativistic line profile in each case; the good spectral resolution of the EPIC/PN and the high statistics spectra allow to put very good constraints on the disk geometry and ionization stage of the reflecting matter.

Photoionization of Polarized Atoms Applications to Free Atoms and Ferromagnets

1996

Discussion of connections between different phenomena observed in seemingly different situations usually helps to better understanding of the physics of underlying processes. Some time ago Farago1 discussed analogies and contrasts between light polarization and electron spin polarization. He showed that though in both cases the same Stokes vector formalism2 can be applied, the analogies between them have rather limited validity. We will discuss here the applicability of equations derived for the description of photoionization of free polarized atoms3,4 to photoemission from ferromagnets5,6. We show that qualitative features of photoemission from core levels of ferromagnets are correctly rep…

Theoretical study of the discrete and continuum spectrum of BeH

2008

The transition intensities supplied in this Letter are directly connected with a description of the discrete and continuum spectrum of BeH. An attempt to meet our goal requires the calculation of the absorption oscillator strengths of several transitions to Rydberg states of BeH, together with differential oscillator strengths which give rise to different dipole-allowed photoionization channels from the molecular ground state. The calculations have been performed with the molecular-adapted quantum defect orbital (MQDO) approach. Predictions of new spectroscopic data on BeH at energies where high Rydberg transitions can take place, including the continuum region of the spectrum have been mad…
