A Novel Iris Recognition System based on Micro-Features
2007
In this paper a novel approach for iris recognition system based on iris micro-features is proposed. The proposed system follows the minutiae based approach developed for fingerprint recognition systems. The proposed system uses four iris microfeatures, considered as minutiae, for identification. The individualized characteristics are nucleus, collarette, valleys and radius. Iris recognition is divided in three main phases: image preprocessing, micro-features extraction and matching. The algorithm has been tested on CASIA v1.0 iris image database obtaining an high accuracy. The obtained experimental results have been analyzed and compared with the Daugman based approach.
Design and Implementation of a Low-cost Embedded Iris Recognition System on a Dual-core Processor Platform
2012
Abstract Design of a low-cost embedded iris recognition system is described in this paper. Firstly, we develop a simple and effective iris image acquisition unit, which is cheap and easy to use. This is achieved by both of hardware design and image evaluation algorithm development. Secondly, the iris recognition algorithm is introduced, including iris segmentation, image normalization, feature extraction, and code matching. The algorithm implementation architecture is based on an embedded dual-core processor platform, Texas Instruments TMS320DM6446 evaluation module (Davinci), which contains an ARM core and a DSP core in one chip. Thirdly, the evaluation experiments are performed on the est…
A fast fusion technique for fingerprint and iris spatial descriptors in multimodal biometric systems
2014
Multimodal biometric identification systems aim to combine two or more physical or behavioral traits to provide optimal False Acceptance Rate (FAR) and False Rejection Rate (FRR). In this paper a new fusion technique for fingerprint and iris spatial descriptors with a low execution time is presented. The report focuses on spatial fusion strategies, offering and proposing a modern perspective on multi-biometrics. In greater detail, a spatial-based approach and a homogeneous biometric vector, integrating iris and fingerprint data, are generated, fused, and processed for the overall system matching score. The goal of this approach is to demonstrate that, by using spatial iris features followin…
Universal Gravitation and the (Un)Intelligibility of Natural Philosophy
2019
This article centers on Hume's position on the intelligibility of natural philosophy. To that end, the controversy surrounding universal gravitation shall be scrutinized. It is very well known that Hume sides with the Newtonian experimentalist approach rather than with the Leibnizian demand for intelligibility. However, what is not clear is Hume's overall position on the intelligibility of natural philosophy. It shall be argued that Hume declines Leibniz's principle of intelligibility. However, Hume does not eschew intelligibility altogether; his concept of causation itself stipulates mechanical intelligibility. peerReviewed
Clustering Bacteria Species Using Neural Gas: Preliminary Study
2009
In this work a method for clustering and visualization of bacteria taxonomy is presented. A modified version of the Batch Median Neural Gas (BNG) algorithm is proposed. The BNG algorithm is able to manage non vectorial data given as a dissimilarity matrix. We tested the modified BNG on the dissimilarity matrix obtained from sequences alignment and computing distances using bacteria genotype information regarding the16S rRNA housekeeping gene, which represents a stable part of bacteria genome. The dataset used for the experiments is obtained from the Ribosomal Database Project II, and it is made of 5159 sequences of 16S rRNA genes. Preliminary results of the experiments show a promising abil…

Torakālās aortas modeļa izveide no datortomogrāfijas uzņēmumiem un asins plūsmas modelēšana tajā
2019
I am not English. I am Irish which is quite another thing: Reconsidering Wilde’s Irishness
2023
Even though O. Wilde's Irishness is difficult to trace, there is a profound sense of Irishness underlying his life and much of what he wrote and thought, especially in his correspondence. In my paper, I evaluate the role of Irishness within his life and work in order to assess how it shapes and influences his own thinking and writing. Perhaps considered as one facet of his all-interesting multifarious doubleness, still, it occupies a specific role within reception studies and explains why there has always been a strong interest towards his life and work among his fellow countrymen.
From Protest to Power: The Rise of the DUP
2018
In 2006, the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) performed the most spectacular political turnaround in Northern Irish political history. The party worked against any Irish dimension in Northern Irish politics but took up power with Sinn Fein (SF) after the St Andrews agreement. This chapter discusses how the DUP emerged as the leading unionist party. The unionist ‘zero-sum-game’ went in favour of the DUP, but what motivated this political change in the unionist community? This chapter traces how the DUP moved from being a party of clear opposition to becoming a party of power. How did the party increase its electoral support while they at the same time manoeuvred themselves into a negotiating …
