Potential myocardial iron content evaluation by magnetic resonance imaging in thalassemia major patients treated with Deferoxamine or Deferiprone dur…
2003
The purpose of this study was to evaluate if the variations of heart magnetic resonance imaging in beta-thalassemia major patients treated with Deferoxamine B mesylate (DF) or Deferiprone (L1) chelation therapy is a useful tool of the indirect myocardial iron content determination. For this reason, a prospective study was carried out. Seventy-two consecutive patients with beta-thalassemia major (35 treated with DF and 37 with L1) were studied. The main outcome results were laboratory parameters including determination of the liver iron concentration (LIC) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the heart and liver. The heart to muscle signal intensity ratios (HSIRs) were significantly incre…
Role of hypogonadism in development of bone alterations in thalassemic patients
2005
Although transfusions and chelation therapy have improved survival of patients afflicted with Thalassemia Major (TM), endocrine alterations are still common complications. Particularly, hypogonadism plays an important role in the aetiology of osteoporosis in these patients. It is clear that in most patients the gonadal failure is a consequence of a pituitary damage and that a hypogonadotropic hypogonadism occurs; nevertheless, also a gonadal damage because of iron deposition may be a further cause of hypogonadism. Prevalence of the pubertal failure ranges between 50 to 80% of the cases. In some studies ferritin levels have been correlated with hypogonadism, suggesting that improvement of ch…

Decompressive Craniectomy Improves QTc Interval in Traumatic Brain Injury Patients
2020
Background: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is commonly associated with cardiac dysfunction, which may be reflected by abnormal electrocardiograms (ECG) and/or contractility. TBI-related cardiac disorders depend on the type of cerebral injury, the region of brain damage and the severity of the intracranial hypertension. Decompressive craniectomy (DC) is commonly used to reduce intra-cranial hypertension (ICH). Although DC decreases ICH rapidly, its effect on ECG has not been systematically studied. The aim of this study was to analyze the changes in ECG in patients undergoing DC. Methods: Adult patients without previously known cardiac diseases treated for isolated TBI with DC were studied. EC…
El impacto del cambio climático en la movilidad humana : las migraciones climáticas en el contexto internacional y europeo
2021
For decades, the migration phenomenon has been one of the thorniest regulatory issues in the European Union (EU) policy. In addition, today, the fight against climate change in all regions of the world makes the situation worse for the new ?climate refugees? or ?environmental displaced people?, whose legal status is not yet covered by the ancient 1951 Refugee Convention.
