Incidence and outcome of cerebrovascular events related to cervical artery dissection: the Dijon Stroke Registry.

2013

Background Reliable epidemiological data on the true incidence of cerebrovascular events related to spontaneous cervical artery dissection, including stroke and transient ischemic attack, are scarce. Aims To evaluate the incidence, characteristics, and outcome of cerebrovascular events due to cervical artery dissection. Methods All cerebrovascular events (stroke and transient ischemic attack) occurring in Dijon, France, from 2006 to 2011, were retrieved from a population-based registry. Patients with a cervical artery dissection were identified. Incidence rates, baseline characteristics, and outcome at three-months were described. Results Among the 1368 patients with cerebrovascular events,…

Temporal Trends in the Incidence of Ischemic Stroke in Young Adults: Dijon Stroke Registry

2021

<b><i>Introduction:</i></b> Stroke is associated with major consequences in terms of socioeconomic impact and lost disability-adjusted life in young victims, thus justifying a careful surveillance of epidemiological trends. This study aimed to assess changes in the incidence of ischemic stroke in young adults over a long period. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> All cases of first-ever ischemic stroke that occurred among adults aged 18–55 years were prospectively recorded using the population-based Dijon Stroke Registry, from 1985 to 2017. Sex-specific annual incidence rates were calculated and were presented according to 6 time periods. Incidence rate r…

Early Seizures After Acute Stroke: A Study of 1,640 Cases

1994

We evaluated prospectively the occurrence of seizures within 15 days of a first stroke or transient ischemic episode in 1,640 patients to study relation between seizures and type of stroke. Seizures occurred in 90 patients (5.4%), including 36 (4.4%) of 814 with infarct owing to atheroma, 21 (16.6%) of 126 with infarct owing to cardiogenic embolus, 3 (1%) of 273 owing to lacunar infarct, 5 (1.9%) of 259 owing to transient ischemic attack (TIA), 21 (16.2%) of 129 owing to supratentorial hematoma, and 4 (16.6%) of 24 owing to subarachnoid hemorrhage. Thirteen (14.6%) of 89 subcortical infarcts were associated with seizures. Seizures were the initial sign of stroke in 80 (89%) of 90 cases and …

Diabetic and non-diabetic subjects with ischemic stroke: Differences, subtype distribution and outcome

2008

Abstract Background and aim Diabetes mellitus increases the risk of stroke, and pathophysiological changes of diabetic cerebral vessels may differ in comparison with non-diabetic ones; nonetheless, the clinical and prognostic profile of stroke in diabetic patients is not yet fully understood. On this basis, the aim of our study was to evaluate cerebrovascular risk factor prevalence in diabetic stroke patients in comparison with non-diabetics, to analyze whether diabetics have a different prevalence of stroke subtypes as classified by the TOAST classification, and determine whether diabetics and non-diabetics have a different prognosis. Methods and results We enrolled 102 diabetics and 204 n…

Frequency of cardiac arrhythmias in older adults: Findings from the Subclinical Atrial Fibrillation and Risk of Ischemic Stroke (SAFARIS) study

2021

BACKGROUND: Prolonged monitoring of cardiac rhythm has been used to screen for subclinical atrial fibrillation (AF); little is known about other arrhythmias in the general population, especially in the elderly, who are at higher risk of arrhythmias. METHODS: We evaluated the frequency of arrhythmias in the tri-ethnic (white, Black, Hispanic), community-based Subclinical Atrial Fibrillation and Risk of Ischemic Stroke (SAFARIS) study using a patch-based recorder for up to 14 days in 527 participants free of AF, congestive heart failure (CHF) or history of stroke. Differences according to gender, age, ethnicity and presence of hypertension, diabetes and pertinent ECG and echocardiographic var…

High concentration of C-type natriuretic peptide promotes VEGF-dependent vasculogenesis in the remodeled region of infarcted swine heart with preserv…

2013

Vasculogenesis is a hallmark of myocardial restoration. Post-ischemic late remodeling is associated with pathology and function worsening. At the same time, neo-vasculogenesis helps function improving and requires the release of vascular endothelial growth factor type A (VEGF-A). The vasculogenic role of C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP), a cardiac paracrine hormone, is unknown in infarcted hearts with preserved left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction (EF). We explored whether myocardial VEGF-dependent vasculogenesis is affected by CNP.To this end, infarcted swine hearts were investigated by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), histological and molecular assays. At the fourth week, MRI showed t…

Neuroglobin mRNA expression after transient global brain ischemia and prolonged hypoxia in cell culture.

2006

Abstract Neuroglobin is a nerve-specific respiratory protein that has been proposed to play an important role in the protection of brain neurons from ischemic and hypoxic injuries. Here, we investigated the regulation of neuroglobin expression after transient global ischemia in the rat brain using mRNA in situ hybridization and under hypoxic stress in cultured neuronal cell lines (PC12, HN33) by quantitative RT-PCR. While neuroglobin mRNA expression was significantly enhanced in cell culture after severe prolonged hypoxia (0–1% O 2 for 24 h), we did not find any significant increases in neuroglobin mRNA levels in the rat brain after transient global ischemia. Vegf and Glut1 mRNAs showed inc…

Prognostic implications of dipyridamole cardiac MR imaging: a prospective multicenter registry

2011

Purpose: To evaluate dipyridamole cardiac magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in the prediction of major events (MEs) in patients with ischemic chest pain in a large multicenter registry. Materials and Methods: Institutional ethics committee approval and written informed consent were obtained. A total of 1722 patients who were undergoing cardiac MR imaging for chest pain were included. Wall motion abnormalities (WMAs) at rest, hyperemia perfusion defect (PD), late gadolinium enhancement (LGE), and inducible WMA were analyzed (abnormal if more than one abnormal segment was seen) with the 17-segment model. A cardiac MR categorization was created: category 1, no PD, LGE, or inducible WMA; category…

Processing Past Tense in the left cerebellum

2014

We report the case of a patient with ischemic lesion of the left cerebellum, who showed specific deficits in processing past versus future tense of action verbs. These findings confirm, in the presence of cerebellar damage, previous results obtained with transcranial magnetic stimulation in healthy subjects and suggest a specificity of the left cerebellum for preparation of responses to the past tense of action verbs. As part of the procedural brain, the cerebellum could play a role in applying the linguistic rules for selection of morphemes typical of past and future tense formation.

Homoarginine Levels are Regulated by L-Arginine: Glycine Amidinotransferase and Affect Stroke Outcome: Results from Human and Murine Studies

2013

Background— Endogenous arginine homologues, including homoarginine, have been identified as novel biomarkers for cardiovascular disease and outcomes. Our studies of human cohorts and a confirmatory murine model associated the arginine homologue homoarginine and its metabolism with stroke pathology and outcome. Methods and Results— Increasing homoarginine levels were independently associated with a reduction in all-cause mortality in patients with ischemic stroke (7.4 years of follow-up; hazard ratio for 1-SD homoarginine, 0.79 [95% confidence interval, 0.64–0.96]; P =0.019; n=389). Homoarginine was also independently associated with the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale+age score …
