Precision Spectroscopy on Trapped Radioactive Ions: Ground-State Hyperfine Splittings of 133 Ba + and 131 Ba +

The ground-state hyperfine splitting of radioactive Ba+ isotopes of mass 133 and 131, confined in a r.f. quadrupole trap, has been measured by laser-microwave double resonances. The results are Δν(133) = 9 925 453 554.59(10) Hz and Δν(131) = 9 107 913 698.97 (50) Hz. The experiment, including measurements of systematic shifts, was performed on quantities of about 1012 isotopes, produced by nuclear reactions and collected at the ISOLDE facility at CERN. The precision is comparable to equivalent measurements on stable isotopes and demonstrates the high-sensitivity of the stored-ion technique. Experimental study of fragmentation products in the reactions112Sn+112Snand124Sn+124Snat 1AGeV

Production cross sections and longitudinal velocity distributions of the projectilelike residues produced in the reactions ${}^{112}\text{Sn}+{}^{112}\text{Sn}$ and ${}^{124}\text{Sn}+{}^{124}\text{Sn}$, both at an incident beam energy of 1$A$ GeV, were measured with the high-resolution magnetic spectrometer, the Fragment Separator of GSI. For both reactions the characteristics of the velocity distributions and nuclide production cross sections were determined for residues with atomic number $Z\ensuremath{\ge}10$. A comparison of the results of the two reactions is presented.

The measurement of nuclear properties by atomic physics methods has influenced a great deal of our present understanding of the nuclear structure. This started from the discovery of the nuclear spin and magnetic moment, the observation of isotope shifts related to nuclear radii, and the resolution of quadrupole interaction effects in the hyperfine structures. The invention and improvement of many spectroscopic techniques has led to a comprehensive knowledge of the electromagnetic ground-state properties of all stable and many radioactive nuclides. Absolute frequency measurements on the 2S→3S transition of lithium-6,7

The frequencies of the 2S–3S two-photon transition for the stable lithium isotopes were measured by cavity-enhanced Doppler-free laser excitation that was controlled by a femtosecond frequency comb. The resulting values of 815 618 181.57(18) and 815 606 727.59(18) MHz, respectively, for 7Li and 6Li are in agreement with previous measurements but are more accurate by an order of magnitude. There is still a discrepancy of about 11.6 and 10.6 MHz from the latest theoretical values. The study of the collective properties of nuclear excitations far from stability provides information about the shell structure at extreme conditions. Spectroscopic ob- servables such as the energy or the transition probabilities of the lowest states, in nuclei with large neutron excess, allow to probe the density and isospin dependence of the ef- fective interaction. Relativistic J-dependence of the isotope shift in the 6s-6p doublet of Ba II

1984

The collinear laser-ion beam technique has been used to measure the isotope shift and hyperfine structure in the 6s-6p doublet (4,934A, 4,554A) of Ba II for all seven stable isotopes. The influence of the excited2P1/2 and2P3/2 states on the field shift leads to a difference of 2.5(3)% in the electronicF factors. The specific mass shifts differ by {A′-A} 2.2(3) MHz which corresponds to about 12% of the normal mass shift.

Shifts of the 3D - 4P transitions in different isotopes of positive calcium ions

A sample of stable isotopes containing the masses 40, 42, 43 and 44 was stored under buffer-gas conditions in a Paul ion trap. After population of the metastable 3D levels by spontaneous decay of the laser-excited 4P state we observed laser-induced fluorescence when we scanned a laser across the different 3D - 4P fine-structure lines at 850, 854 and 866 nm. From the Doppler-limited lines of these transitions we deduced the isotope shifts, which are of the order of several GHz due to the large specific mass shift of the metastable 3D levels.

Abstract Planktonic foraminiferal biostratigraphy and isotope stratigraphy analyses of Turonian-Maastrichtian deposits have been carried out in the western part of the Kopet-Dagh Basin. The identification of the planktonic foraminiferal assemblages has led to the recognition of twelve Upper Cretaceous zones (Helvetoglobotruncana helvetica Zone to the Contusotruncana contusa-Abathomphalus mayaroensis zone) from the Tethyan realm.
