Heteroglossic and multimodal resources in use : participation across spaces of identification in a Christian lifestyle sports community

This dissertation examines how members of one particular youth community, Christian lifestyle sports enthusiasts in Finland, use language and other semiotic resources to construct participation in their community of practice (CoP). The CoP is organized around the late-modern activity culture of lifestyle sports. The participants also share the Christian faith and in their snowboarding camps organize Bible study sessions and engage in prayer and worship. The theoretical and methodological framework incorporates sociolinguistics, social semiotics, discourse studies and connective ethnography, including the exploration of both the digital and physical spaces of the community. Artikkelissa pohditaan alueellisen tasapainon käsitettä ja tarkastellaan tasapainon kehitystä Suomessa vuodesta 1995 lähtien. Kaupungistumisen kiihtymisen myötä alueellinen keskittyminen on edennyt nopeasti kasvun kohdistuessa vain metropolialueelle ja suuriin korkeakoulukaupunkeihin. Aluelähtöisesti katsoen alueellinen tasapaino on järkkynyt. Ihmislähtöisesti tarkastellen kaupungistuminen ei ole kuitenkaan johtanut suuriin alueiden välisiin tulotaso- tai hyvinvointieroihin, vaikka jähmeät sopeutumisprosessit, ennen kaikkea asuntomarkkinoilta seuraavat liikkuvuuden esteet todennäköisesti hidastavat alueelliseen tasapainoon pääsyä. peerReviewed

The curriculum is seen as a key steering document for teaching and learning. In Finland, its latest reform from 2014 highlights the importance of pupil’s learning rather than teaching. This article describes the learner-centered approach of the Finnish National Core Curriculum for Basic Education. The theoretical frame of reference for the study is the points of focus in the curriculum’s conception of learning and the definition of learner-centered approach based on them. Modern digital technologies have become common in educational settings of all levels. This has made the use of digital storytelling (DST) more applicable in early childhood education and care (ECEC). This paper examines how stances and understandings pertaining to whether home education is civically legitimate within liberal democratic contexts can depend on how one conceives normative roles of the secular state and the religious neutrality that is commonly associated with it. For the purposes of this paper, home education is understood as a manifestation of an educational philosophy ideologically based on a given conception of the good. Two polar conceptions of secularism, republican and liberal-pluralist, are explored.
