Imagined Identities and Communities in the Learning Context of Finnish as a Second Language

This case study on two migrant pupils of Finnish as L2 was carried out in Finland, which lies outside the most common context of such research, i.e. ESL or EFL in an English-speaking country. The study thus attempts to address the need to expand the research contexts of L2 identity issues. Using ethnographic data collected inside and outside a preparatory language classroom, this study aims to examine how the pupils make sense of their new learning environment and how, through language learning, they construct identities. Tämä pro gradu-tutkielma keskittyy tutkimaan oppilaiden kokemuksellista monikielisyyttä sekä oppilaiden yksilöllisiä kielirepertuaareja. Tarkoituksena on tutkia oppilaita monikielisinä kielenkäyttäjinä sekä tutkia mitä kieliä ja kielimuotoja heidän kielirepertuaareihinsa lukeutuu. Tutkielma pyrkii vastaamaan myös siihen, millainen rooli koulussa opiskeltavilla kielillä oppilaiden elämässä on. James Cummins has stated that “a cognitively and academically beneficial form of bilingualism can be achieved only on the basis of adequately developed first language (L1) skills” (1979, p. 222). In this chapter we focus on bilingual writing development and its connections to learners’ cognitive and linguistic skills in L1 and L2 and background factors. Our participants come from Russian-speaking immigrant families living in Finland. Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan hengellisyyden merkitystä päihdeongelmasta toipumiselle. Tutkimuksen keskeisiä käsitteitä ovat päihdeongelma, päihdeongelmasta toipuminen sekä hengellisyys. Tutkimuksen teoreettisessa viitekehyksessä avataan näitä käsitteitä sekä pohditaan aiemman tutkimuksen valossa päihdeongelmasta toipumisen ja hengellisyyden yhteyttä. The Predictors of Literacy Skills among Monolingual and Bilingual Finnish–Swedish Children During First Grade

The aim of the study was to examine which predictor variables are related to literacy skills among monolingual Swedish (n = 269) and bilingual Finnish–Swedish (n = 229) children at the first grade in the Swedish-speaking schools in Finland. The participants were assessed in phonological awareness, letter knowledge, rapid automatized naming (RAN), word recognition, reading fluency, and spelling. The results showed that RAN was the most significant predictor of reading and spelling skills in both language groups, and monolingual children performed significantly better in RAN.
