In this article, I argue that Porphyry’s conception of justice in On abstinence is remarkable for several reasons. While I agree with Fay Edwards that Porphyry does not assume the moral status of animals to depend on their rationality, I argue that Porphyry’s claim is not based on any form of the assumption that animals deserve moral consideration only if they share some relevant property with human beings. Contrary to Edwards, I argue that this is not because justice is irrelevant to animals in On abstinence 3. Rather, extending abstinence from causing harm to humans to apply also to non-human animals and plants is a constitutive element in the higher forms of justice that Porphyry require…

Korkeakouluopiskelu on elämänvaihe, johon liittyy aikuistuminen ja jolloin on mahdollista kokeilla erilaisia valintoja ennen vakiintuneemman elämäntavan muodostamista. Yksinäisyyden kokemus usein korostuu elämän muutostilanteissa. Tässä tutkimuksessa yksinäisyys käsitetään subjektiivisena ja enimmäkseen kielteisenä kokemuksena. Pro gradu -tutkimuksessani tutkin yli 60-vuotiaiden lonkkamurtumapotilaiden elämäntilannetta ja kuntoutuskokemuksia toimijuusnäkökulmasta. Tutkimukseni teoreettisen viitekehyksen muodostavat Anthony Giddensin strukturaatioteorian tarkastelu yhdessä Jyrki Jyrkämän toimijuusviitekehyksen eri ulottuvuuksien, kuten elämänkulku, pakot, välttämättömyydet, esteet ja mahdollisuudet ja tulevaisuuden odotukset – kanssa. Tutkimuksessani haastattelin Keski-Suomen eri kunnissa asuneita seitsemää (7) ikääntyvää naista, joilla jokaisella oli ollut lonkkamurtuma. AbstractTowards the end of the editing process, we started to see the book as something more than a collection of chapters around a theme: as an assemblage, which included, of course, the community of authors. When we put out the first call for contributions in May 2018, most authors volunteered a contribution rather quickly, others joined a bit later, and some dropped out for different reasons, underlining the dynamic nature of our assemblage. In pre-pandemic times, we met on and off campus, introduced some of our ideas at conferences, and had a workshop day to brainstorm, plan chapters, and reflect on the process and the purpose of the book. The looming climate crisis requires an immediate response, also on an individual level. Consumers are being asked to reduce and replace their carbon-intensive consumption behaviors. While mutation rates have been extensively studied, variation in mutation rates throughout the genome is poorly understood. To understand patterns of genetic variation, it is important to understand how mutation rates vary. Chromatin modifications may be an important factor in determining variation in mutation rates in eukaryotic genomes. To study variation in mutation rates, we performed a mutation accumulation experiment in the filamentous fungus Neurospora crassa, and sequenced the genomes of the 40 MA lines that had been propagated asexually for approximately 1015 [1003, 1026] mitoses.
