Gendered power relations in the digital age : an analysis of Japanese women’s media choice and use within a global context

This study investigates the persistence of gendered choice and use of media, particularly in Japanese domestic settings. It shows how women’s significant presence in the digital media environment does not necessarily translate into substantial changes in gendered power dynamics in choosing and using particular media for certain purposes at home. This project’s authors, researchers from Argentina, Finland, Israel, Japan, and the US, analyzed interview data from Japan by drawing on the Foucauldian concept of micro-level power, which is categorized into three main types: personal authority, media affordances, and space-time constellations. Yhdysvaltain kommodori Matthew C. Perry purjehti Japaniin vuosina 1853 ja 1854 tavoitteenaan solmia aiemmin sulkeutuneen maan kanssa yhteistyösopimus. Hän koosti matkasta runsaan matkakertomuksen, jossa kuvaillaan matkaa, neuvotteluja ja matkalla kohdattuja kansoja. Pro gradu -tutkielmassani selvitän, millaisen kuvan Perryn nimissä julkaistu matkakertomus antoi Japanista ja japanilaisista, miten japanilaiset suhteutuivat muihin idän kansoihin ja mitä kuvaus lopulta kertoi amerikkalaisista itsestään. This study draws together a number of popular issues: images, intercultural communication and Japan. In particular, Japan has been a popular topic for at least the last three decades. The Japanese Economical Miracle awoke a real boom in the Western literature at the end of 1970s, and in the 1980s the Miracle became a fashionable topic in the Western world.
