Ragnar Frisch and the Postwar Norwegian Economy

2014

Published version of an article in the journal: Econ Journal Watch. Also available from the publisher at: http://econjwatch.org/articles/ragnar-frisch-and-the-norwegian-postwar-economy. Open Access In the story of Norwegian economics, and of Norwegian economic policy and performance during the postwar years, a central place must be given to Ragnar Frisch (1895-1973). In 1969 he was awarded the first Nobel Prize in economics, together with Jan Tinbergen (1903-1994). In our view, the brighter parts of the story come only in the later years, and they involve the overcoming of Frisch's influence and legacy. As professor, Frisch started a grand project to establish economics as a science based o…

A reply to Olav Bjerkholt on the postwar Norwegian economy

2014

Published version of an article in the journal: Econ Journal Watch. Also available from the publisher at: http://econjwatch.org/articles/a-reply-to-olav-bjerkholt-on-the-postwar-norwegian-economy Open Access Professor Olav Bjerkholt has provided a spirited critique of our 2014 article titled “Ragnar Frisch and the Postwar Norwegian Economy.” Here we reply briefly, noting that many of the quotations he provides actually support our interpretation, that it is naïve of him to play the ideology card, and that he offers no response whatsoever to our central point: that Norway’s postwar growth rates have to be understood in light of the country’s exceptionally high investment ratios, which meant …

Developing a Conceptual Framework for Investigating Communication Supporting Community Resilience

2015

In crisis management, cooperation within the response network is seen as crucial. Usually, this network refers to authorities and nongovernmental organizations, such as the Red Cross. However, the authors argue that to improve societal resilience one should take a broader overview of the actors involved in crisis preparedness and mitigation, and also include the public. With this in mind, the role of communication is scrutinized and a conceptual framework developed as a starting point for further investigation into how communication may be developed to strengthen a community approach to crisis management that includes citizen groups in the broader response network. A model is presented alon…

Towards Sustaining Levels of Reflective Learning: How Do Transformational Leadership, Task Interdependence, and Self-Efficacy Shape Teacher Learning …

2015

Whereas cross-sectional research has shown that transformational leadership, task interdependence, and self-efficacy are positively related to teachers’ engagement in reflective learning activities, the causal direction of these relations needs further inquiry. At the same time, individual teacher learning might play a mutual role in strengthening school-level capacity for sustained improvement. Building on previous research, this longitudinal study therefore examines how transformational leadership, task interdependence, self-efficacy, and teachers’ engagement in self-reflection mutually affect each other over time. Questionnaire data gathered on three measurement occasions from 655 Dutch …

Public Discourse on Human Trafficking in International Issue Arenas

2015

Abstract. The purpose of this study is to better understand how the complex problem of human trafficking is addressed in international debates. How the discussion about human trafficking develops and how it is debated ultimately influences how the decision-making process unfolds. In order to understand the formation of public policy and laws, therefore, it is important to study the debate that occurs prior to decision making. This analysis focuses on the narratives used by major, well-established human rights and political actors that argue for necessary actions to be undertaken — such as the formation of new policies and laws in the European Union — as an attempt to protect citizens of the…
