Data visualization in Scandinavian newsrooms : emerging trends in journalistic visualisation practices
2018
Abstract The visualization of numeric data is becoming an important element in journalism. In this article, we present an interview study investigating data visualization practices in Scandinavian newsrooms. Editorial leaders, data journalists, developers and graphic designers in 10 major news organizations in Norway, Sweden and Denmark provide information for the study on a range of issues concerning visualization practices and experiences. The emergence of multi-skilled specialist groups as well as innovation in technology and the ‘mobile first mantra’ are identified as important factors in the fast-developing practices of journalistic data visualization. Elements of tension and negotiati…
Psychosocial Intervention: A Jornada de uma Revista Rumo a Qualidade Científica, Visibilidade e Internacionalização
2015
AbstractThis paper describes the journey that the journal Psychosocial Intervention began in 2011, with the aim of increasing its scientific quality and broadening its reach. Founded in 1992, Psychosocial Intervention began a new phase in 2011, with the advent of a new Editor-in-Chief, editorial team, and editorial policy. At that point, strategic decisions were made in the areas of editorial and review practices, language, and dissemination of the journal, which resulted in a publication of higher quality and broader reach. The description of the journey undertaken by Psychosocial Intervention is presented with the hope that this experience may be useful to scholars, scientific organizatio…
Sourcing practices in online journalism : an ethnographic study of the formation of trust in and the use of journalistic sources
2017
Arguably one of the most important factors of journalistic quality is careful source selection. Studies on online journalism have revealed working conditions which may lead to poor sourcing practices. This article seeks to answer the following questions: What sources do online journalists use, and how do they rationalize their sourcing practices? A total of 17 Finnish online journalists in 7 newsrooms were observed and interviewed over their practices of source searching, evaluation, and use. The study revealed five distinctive rationales of source use, which I call trust discourses: the ideological, the pragmatic, the cynically pragmatic, the consensual, and the contextual trust. Different…
Assessing the case of Dengue in Argentina 2009: discrimination and fear
2010
After almost a decade, the re-appearance of Dengue in Argentina caused panic and fears. Unlike Bolivia, Brazil and Paraguay where policies of preventions have been followed, the future of dengue is uncertain for Argentina; this paper does not have any political affiliation but emphasizes the role that mass media play in the coverage of epidemics. The question as to whether a newspaper or mass media corporation should maintain a minimum of objectivity is too complex to be resolved in this short article. However, we have so far set forth a model which will help other researchers to interpret topics of this nature in the future. In moments of disorder, uncertainty or disaster, societies experi…
We are the people and you are fake news: a social identity approach to populist citizens’ false consensus and hostile media perceptions
2018
This study aims to investigate the relationships between citizens’ populist attitudes, perceptions of public opinion, and perceptions of mainstream news media. Relying on social identity theory as an explanatory framework, this article argues that populist citizens assume that public opinion is congruent with their own opinion and that mainstream media reporting is hostile toward their own views. To date, only anecdotal evidence suggests that both assumptions are true. The relationships are investigated in a cross-sectional survey with samples drawn from four Western European countries ( N = 3,354). Multigroup regression analysis supports our hypotheses: False consensus and hostile media p…
Teknikko, taiteilija vai journalisti? : mediatoimittajien ammatti-identiteetti
2015
Tässä tutkimuksessa selvitetään minkälaiseksi Yleisradion aluetoimituksissa työskentelevät mediatoimittajat kokevat ammatillisen identiteettinsä. Tutkimusmetodina käytetään teemahaastattelua. Mediatoimittajan työnkuvaa tarkastellaan kuvajournalismin käsitettä vasten, jotta selviäisi tuleeko mediatoimittajan työtä pitää journalistisena työnä. Samalla avataan mediatoimittajan työnkuvaa, sillä se vaikuttaa olevan sangen tuntematon jopa monelle journalismin alan ammattilaiselle. Mediatoimittajan koulutustausta on useimmiten joko AMK- tai ammatillinen koulutus. Journalistisiin töihin tullaan nykyään useimmiten yliopistokoulutuksen kautta. Haastattelututkimuksella selvit…

Focusing on Increasing Velocity during Heavy Resistance Knee Flexion Exercise Boosts Hamstring Muscle Activity in Chronic Stroke Patients
2016
Background. Muscle strength is markedly reduced in stroke patients, which has negative implications for functional capacity and work ability. Different types of feedback during strength training exercises may alter neuromuscular activity and functional gains.Objective. To compare levels of muscle activity during conditions of blindfolding and intended high contraction speed with a normal condition of high-intensity knee flexions.Methods. Eighteen patients performed unilateral machine knee flexions with a 10-repetition maximum load. Surface electromyography (EMG) was recorded from the quadrics and hamstring muscles and normalized to maximal EMG (nEMG) of the nonparetic limb.Results. For the …
