Reconstruction of undergraduate analytical chemistry laboratory course
2016
The Analytical chemistry laboratory course at the Department of Chemistry at the University of Jyväskylä was reconstructed due to problems in the traditional arrangement, structure and contents of the course. The purposes of the reform were: to increase student-centered activity, co-operation and inquiry-based learning; to strengthen the connections to real-life; to develop students’ critical-thinking skills; and to decrease the number of drop-outs during the course. The reconstructed course includes independent laboratory work tasks and a research project. The results of the projects are presented in a course seminar. All of the laboratory experiments are done in groups of 8-10 students un…

Special Issue on “Frontier Biomechanical Challenges in Cardiovascular Physiopathology”
2017
This special issue collects a number of original contributions, which were presented and discussed during the thematic Symposium organized by the Italian Chapter of the European Society of Biomechanics (ESB) in collaboration with the Mediterranean Institute for Transplantation and Advanced Specialized Therapies (ISMETT – IRCCS), the Fondazione RiMED and the University of Palermo. The Symposium focused on recent advances in cardiovascular biomechanics, and the promise they hold for clinical therapeutic strategies and future research.

2014
On the basis of documents in the Latvian State Archives, this paper discusses the armed struggleagainst the Soviet authorities in Vidzeme, in northern Latgala, and Sela, which took placeduring the Latvian Wars of Independence, and was joined voluntarily by the local populationin an organised way. The discussion tells about the armed guerrilla groups that operated inVidzeme and northern Latgala in 1919, and formed a serious obstacle to the establishmentof Soviet power, the participation of ethnic minorities in guerrilla groups, and the features ofthe guerrilla fighting. The collaboration between Latvian guerrillas and Lithuanian troops, andtheir role in the expulsion of Soviet Latvian troops…
Sharing Mare Nostrum: An analysis of Mediterranean maritime history articles in English-language journals
2015
This discussion paper is a follow-up to a previous bibliometric analysis of articles published in The International Journal of Maritime History and maritime-themed articles published in other economic and business history journals over the last 25 years. The paper looks more closely at articles dealing with the Mediterranean and articles written by scholars from the Mediterranean countries. The article is structured around five propositions about current trends in Mediterranean maritime history publishing in English-language journals. nonPeerReviewed
Periodismo de viajes e innovación en la red. Perfiles, apuesta y motivación de los bloggers

Bidaia-kazetaritzak erabateko eklosioa izan du sarean azken hamarkada honetan; gai horri buruzko milaka blog sortu dira. Mezu honetan, aztertzen da blog horien sustatzaileak nor diren, zer gai-mota lantzen dituzten, eta kazetaritzaren arloko ekintzailetza-ekimentzat ote dauzkaten. Horretarako, inkesta bat egin da, online, 35 galderakoa, bost ataletan sailkatuta. Emaitzetan ikusten denez, inkestari erantzun dioten blogarietan gehienak kazetaritzaren arlotik kanpokoak dira eta, proiektuari afizio moduan ekin bazioten ere, diruz etekina ateratzea lortu dute erdiek.; The online travel journalism has experienced a boom in the last decade, with the emergence of thousands of blogs devoted to this …
Unravelling environment and politics in the Spanish press. From Franco’s dictatorship to democracy
2017
The 1970s and 1980s were key years for the consolidation of environmentalism and environmental communication. In Spain, the special political situation during General Franco’s military dictatorship conditioned the coverage of environmental issues, as did the transition to democracy. The Albufera Natural Park (Valencia, Spain) was a particularly significant case in this context, since it was involved in one of the first environmental protests to protect a natural area covered by Spanish media. In this paper, we study opinion articles published in the Valencian newspapers Las Provincias and Levante, in order to analyze the evolution of the environmental discourse in Spanish society from the d…
The Role Of Public Participation And Environmnetal Activism In Environmental Governance In Latvia
2015
The paper discusses engagement of non-governmental organisations and activist groups in environmental governance in Latvia. The research is based on desk research, a number of case studies and action research. Author attempts to analyse to what extent environmental NGOs and groups of activists have contributed to environmental governance and what role public participation plays in that. Author concludes that identification of problematic issues and policy planning are those stages where public participation and activism in environmental governance plays most crucial role. Contrary to common public believe about informal groups and environmental activism only attempting to oppose any propose…
Challenges in Green Analytical Chemistry
2011
Concerns about environmental pollution, global climate change and hazards to human health have increased dramatically. This has led to a call for change in chemical processes including those that are part of chemical analysis. The development of analytical chemistry continues and every new discovery in chemistry, physics, molecular biology, and materials science brings new opportunities and challenges. Yet, contemporary analytical chemistry does not consume resources optimally. Indeed, the usage of toxic chemical compounds is at the highest rate ever. All this makes the emerging field of green chemistry a “hot topic” in industrial, governmental laboratories as well as in academia. This book…
Recommendations for a nomenclature system for reporting methylation aberrations in imprinted domains
2018
The analysis of DNA methylation has become routine in the pipeline for diagnosis of imprinting disorders, with many publications reporting aberrant methylation associated with imprinted differentially methylated regions (DMRs). However, comparisons between these studies are routinely hampered by the lack of consistency in reporting sites of methylation evaluated. To avoid confusion surrounding nomenclature, special care is needed to communicate results accurately, especially between scientists and other health care professionals. Within the European Network for Human Congenital Imprinting Disorders we have discussed these issues and designed a nomenclature for naming imprinted DMRs as well …
