News from the Underground: What were the most important scientific/clinical take-home messages for juniors?
2014
The ERS International Congress has traditionally been a splendid opportunity to present current updates in clinical respiratory medicine and new research findings. This year’s programme was packed, making it impossible to attend all sessions, but juniors interested in specific fields were there for you to highlight the most important take home messages from the 2014 ERS International Congress in Munich. Amongst the most important news for the clinicians was the publication of a Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) guidelines update [1]. In the updated guidelines, the heterogeneity of asthma is emphasised, suggesting the need of “4P” (Personalised, Predictive, Preventive and Participatory) tr…
Borderline journalism: Why do journalists accept and justify questionable practices that establish scandals? A quantitative survey
2018
The shift from descriptive reporting toward an interpretive style of journalism can be regarded as one factor to explain the rising number of reported scandals in Western democracies. While most of these critical reports are based on actual misbehaviors, there are scandals triggered by violations of journalistic norms. This article examines the question of how many journalists accept such violations of norms and what arguments they use to justify them. To answer these questions, we conducted a quantitative online survey among German journalists in June and July 2015. Participants were confronted with descriptions of factual violations of the German press codex that triggered major scandals…
The radium Era: radioactivity and advertising of miracle products in the dawn of the 20th century in Spain
2020
The discovery …
Participatory tools and methods for community action. SESPAS Report 2018
2018
Facilitation of Developmental Tasks in Prisons: Applying the Method of Human-Centred Co-evaluation
2021
AbstractCollaboration and learning are especially needed in times of change in the workplace. This chapter describes a novel method for developing work practices and enhancing professionals’ proactiveness through collective, participatory experimentation and evaluation. We used the method in a low-security closed prison in Finland to advance prison staff’s rehabilitation work with prisoners. The design, implementation and evaluation of the innovations prison officers introduced to advance their work (recording the inmates’ behaviour and needs into their sentence plans) are illustrated. Besides describing how the method was applied in practice, we also identify and discuss the gaps within pr…
Children’s conceptions of mental well-being and ideas for its promotion through digital environments
2021
The aim of this study is to further understanding of children’s conceptions of mental well-being and their ideas for its digital promotion. The study is based on the need to provide children an opportunity to actively participate and share their understanding of mental well-being promotion with others in light of their understanding of what online environments and their design can afford for this promotion. The study was implemented as three subsequent workshops in primary school classrooms comprising four teachers and 79 children aged 9-11 years old. In the first two workshops, children reflected on mental well-being, digital environments they utilise and their possible connections to ment…
Journalism in virtual reality : opportunities and future research challenges

Eight science communication research projects have been funded by the European Commission since 2018. Together these projects have received almost ¿10 million in research funding, and each has been affected to some extent by the COVID-19 global pandemic. This paper provides an overview of the eight projects, how they adapted to the challenges caused by the pandemic, and the subsequent implications for science communication policy and research funding.
Palautteen, kannustuksen ja arvostuksen lähteillä : Sanomalehtien Liiton paikallislehtikilpailun rooli paikallisjournalismin kehittämisessä
2011
Sanomalehtien Liitto järjestää vuosittain paikallislehtikilpailun, jonka tarkoitus on parantaa paikallislehtien laatua. Kilpailussa lehdet saavat raadilta kirjallista palautetta sisällöstään, kuvituksestaan, ulkoasustaan ja mielipidekirjoituksistaan. Pro gradu -työssäni tutkin, millainen käytännön merkitys kilpailulla on paikallisjournalismin kehittäjänä. Samalla pohdin lehtien tavoitteita eli sitä, millaista hyvä paikallisjournalismi on. Vuosina 1994–2009 paikallislehtikilpailua tuomaroivat Jyväskylän yliopiston journalistiikan opiskelijat. Selvitän, miten paikallisjournalistit suhtautuivat nuorten tuomareiden palautteisiin. Ovatko lehdet toteuttaneet kehitysehdotuksia ja pitäneet raadin k…
