This article analyses the new and problematic relationship between the media and individuals’ visibility, as well as privacy in the new context of the Internet, by focusing on the process of transformation of both the public and private dimensions. Analysoin artikkelissani Helsingin Sanomien pääkirjoitusaukeaman tekstejä vuodelta 2014 ja selvitän, millaisen kuvan ne rakentavat länsimaista. Pohdin myös, millä tavalla Ukrainan kriisi ja Venäjän osallisuus siinä osaltaan vahvistavat näkemystä länsimaista kaikessa heterogeenisuudessaan yhtenäisenä toimijana. Artikkelini osoittaa, että maantieteellisestä laajuudestaan ja poliittisesta epäyhtenäisyydestään huolimatta (tai sen vuoksi) länsimaat on hyvä esimerkki Benedict Andersonin ja Michael Billigin kuvailemasta median, sananvalintojen ja pienten arkipäiväisten käytäntöjen avulla ylläpidetystä kuvitellusta yhteisöstä.
