‘A capital fellow, full of vivacity & good talk’: Arthur Symons and Gabriel Sarrazin

2018

International audience; Arthur Symons is currently regarded as a cultural mediator of the cosmopolitan fin de siècle. He stands at the crossroads of distinctive journalistic and literary networks, and of translations in different languages. In the mid-1880s Symons, who had just published An Introduction to the Study of Browning, was regarded as a budding critic with a strong interest in French poets and prose writers. Such an interest opened the door of French publications for him through the mediation of the French critic Gabriel Sarrazin (1853-1935), nowadays as neglected as Symons once was.

2008

Our article aims to reconstitute the image- and speech-making process regarding the “suburbs” through the filming of a documentary on “how young people on the high-rise estates perceive the war in Iraq”. We followed the post-shooting process and the comments and remarks made during the editing for national TV in March 2003. The reconstitution of the different phases of production (especially the impact of how the work involved was split up between those in editorial positions and the journalists “allotted” to the suburbs) reveals a mode whereby successive forms of categorisation are applied to the young people interviewed and what they say, so as to embody a so-called “point of view from th…

The Elements of Advocacy : Finnish PR Consultants' Media Strategies in Lobbying

2023

In Finland the use of public relations (PR) agencies and consultants in political decision making has increased in the last two decades. The development of the Finnish political realm has been similar to that of other Nordic countries where the PR industry has built a strong linkage to the political sphere. The present study analyses how Finnish PR consultants with a political background use and attempt to influence the news media as part of lobbying processes to advance their clients' causes. The chapter is based on 11 interviews with PR consultants that were conducted during November 2018. The main findings indicate that Finnish PR consultants consider the news media and journalists as an…

Journalistic Autonomy as a Professional Value and Element of Journalism Culture: The European Perspective

2017

The current combination of economic recession and info-technological revolution is drastically affecting the working environment of journalists and challenging their autonomy more than ever. This article focuses on how journalists in specific European countries perceive professional autonomy and analyzes the various factors that affect such autonomy. Continuity and discontinuity in journalism cultures are factors that can help us to understand the barriers to media independence and the occupational freedom of journalists. Periods of political and economic instability or crisis can bring about a break down in professional values, the loss of whole journalistic communities, and abrupt changes…
