Reversal of Gender Disparity in Journalism Education- Study of Ghana Institute of Journalism
2017
Journalism has practically become a feminine profession across the world. To understand the root of the flow of women into the Journalism profession it is pertinent to begin at the university education level. Gallagher’s 1992 worldwide survey of female students in 83 journalism institutions reveals a significant increase in number of female students. Djerf-Pierre (2007) and others argue along Bourdieu’s conception of education as a form of social capital which empowers, enables and enhances women’s competitiveness in a pre-dominantly androgynous social arena. The study analyses 16 years of enrolment data of the Academic Affairs Unit of the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ), a leading Jour…
"TV- uutiset yhä kruununjalokivi" : MTV:n televisiouutisten muutos vuosina 2007-2015
2016
Lisäksi tutkielmassa pyritään selvittämään, missä määrin median konvergenssi on va…

The Literary Construction of Journalism Education: A Review of the Course Literature in the Nordic Academic Journalism Programmes
2019
This article investigates the course literature in the curricula of 12 major journalism schools at Northern European universities. This analysis of the course literature listed in documentation of bachelor programmes traces how journalism education institutions constitute their knowledge base on journalism. It is found that Nordic journalism students are required to read almost four books per study credit on average. Undergraduate academic journalism programmes are professionally oriented, and professional literature by non-scientific publishers occupies a major place in the course literature. A strong emphasis is placed on professional books written in the domestic language, with an averag…

Dialogic journalism : how can journalists participate in the networks of social innovation?
2017
This thesis asks the question “What is the role of journalism in social innovation?” It explores how journalism is redefined when it engages in the creation of “the new” in society. The study analyzes four cases of journalism-related social innovation in two countries – the USA and Finland: a contentious national media event; crowdsourcing for legislation; a series of dialogic innovation workshops in Finland; an environment of data-based civic innovation in the USA. Social innovation is defined as innovations that work in meeting social goals. In literature and the contemporary discussion on the crisis of journalism, innovation is required to restore journalisms’ legitimacy and financial su…

Does the journalistic photograph need a context? : Rethinking contextual interpretation
2017
In times when photojournalists experiment with various forms of visual production and journalistic photographs are disseminated not only in the press, but at the photography festivals and in museums, the question about the role of context in photography interpretation should be revisited. Thus, this study provides critical review of the contextual interpretation of journalistic images, focusing on the production, medium and page context. The context of production is discussed here by referring to the quantitative content analysis and iconological context analysis. The context of medium determines the perception of photographs and provides a particular page context, usually limited to the ca…
