AbstractJudging value of scholarly outputs quantitatively remains a difficult but unavoidable challenge. Most of the proposed solutions suffer from three fundamental shortcomings: they involve (i) the concept of journal, in one way or another, (ii) calculating arithmetic averages from extremely skewed distributions, and (iii) binning data by calendar year. Here, we introduce a new metric Co-citation Percentile Rank (CPR), that relates the current citation rate of the target output taken at resolution of days since first citable, to the distribution of current citation rates of outputs in its co-citation set, as its percentile rank in that set. Kuusi vuotta on kulunut siitä, kun Jyväskylän yliopisto siirtyi julkaisutietojen keskitettyyn tallentamiseen. Aiemmin hajautetusti tutkijoiden omasta toimesta tapahtunut CRIS-kirjaamistyö siirrettiin kirjaston (nyk. Avoimen tiedon keskus, OSC) vastuulle niin, että tutkijat itse eivät kirjauksia enää tee, vaan niistä huolehtii OSC. Syntyi "JYU-malli". Transparency of peer review: a semi-structured interview study with chief editors from social sciences and humanities

Background Open peer review practices are increasing in medicine and life sciences, but in social sciences and humanities (SSH) they are still rare. We aimed to map out how editors of respected SSH journals perceive open peer review, how they balance policy, ethics, and pragmatism in the review processes they oversee, and how they view their own power in the process. Methods We conducted 12 pre-registered semi-structured interviews with editors of respected SSH journals. Interviews consisted of 21 questions and lasted an average of 67 min. Mislabel Detection of Finnish Publication Ranks

The paper proposes to analyze a data set of Finnish ranks of academic publication channels with Extreme Learning Machine (ELM). The purpose is to introduce and test recently proposed ELM-based mislabel detection approach with a rich set of features characterizing a publication channel. We will compare the architecture, accuracy, and, especially, the set of detected mislabels of the ELM-based approach to the corresponding reference results on the reference paper.

Faced with intensifying competition for scientific impact measured in terms of citation counts, small disciplines are challenged to prove their importance as they lack the critical mass to accumulate large numbers of citations. This paper demonstrates that by emphasizing theoretical and methodological rigor even small disciplines such as business history can be competitive. Yet it still appears that readers of business history articles first and foremost seek interesting and useful subject matter, i.e. ‘best’ stories that can be used as background information and as tools in comparisons. Julkaisuyksikkö on toimintansa alusta alkaen tähdännyt Jyväskylän yliopiston näkyvyyden ja menestymisen sekä tieteen avoimuuden tukemiseen. Pekka Olsbo käy artikkelissaan läpi julkaisuyksikön toiminnan keskeisiä virstanpylväitä. Julkaisuyksikkö on vuosien saatossa vakiinnuttanut asemansa yliopiston keskeisenä palveluyksikkönä. Niin, miksi kirjoittaa kirjallisuustieteellisiä tekstejä suomeksi nykyisessä kansainvälisyyttä hehkuttavassa akateemisessa ilmapiirissä? Miksi Avain antaa mahdollisuuden jul- kaista tutkimusartikkeleja (yleensä vain) suomeksi ja ruotsiksi – eikä englanniksi? Kun kerran nykyisiltä korkeasti koulutetuilta kirjallisuudentutkijoilta luonnistuu englanniksi kirjoittaminen siinä missä omalla äidinkielelläänkin. Ja kun nimenomaan englanniksi julkaiseminen helpottaa tieteellistä kommunikoimista kielirajojen yli, mikä tietysti on nykymaailmassa aikaisempaa tärkeämpää.
