Unrooting inequality from development : recognition and justification of inequality in global development
2017
How does the tension resolve between a moral order with egalitarian imperatives, such as sustainable and inclusive human development, and a global political economy based on a market system that prioritizes meeting the wants and needs of those with purchasing power? By developing a comprehensive theoretical framework as analytical contribution, I propose to rethink a practice-intensive field (Development and International Cooperation) and analyze the texts that represent the dominant discourse in development policies: the UNDP Human Development Reports and the World Bank’s World Development Reports. These influential institutions have shaped the rise of neoliberalism as a hegemonic developm…

The erosion of personal norms and cognitive dissonance
2016
ABSTRACTIn this article, we study how personal norms and behaviour interact and evolve when agents try to reduce cognitive dissonance, and how this dynamic relates to Nash equilibrium. We find that in long run, agents play, and norms prescribe, Nash equilibrium in material payoffs (in the absence of norms). Our model captures two main facts: (i) norms erode along the play of the game; (ii) the erosion of norms depends on the set of possible economic choices, so that the policy maker can potentially influence them.
Pasado y futuro en la argumentación jurídica
2011

Honest mistake or perhaps not: The role of descriptive and injunctive norms on the magnitude of dishonesty
2021
Trivial acts of dishonesty are very prevalent in everyday life and have severe economic and societal consequences. The present study aims to examine the role of descriptive and injunctive norms in minor and major dishonesty under ambiguity. We devised a novel experimental design in which rule violations can be the result of honest mistakes or various dishonest processes. In this ambiguous context, we observed a high prevalence of minor rule violations at baseline. In two experiments, exposure to increased peer cheating (i.e., negative descriptive norms) promoted major rule violations, whereas the presence of explicit or subtle rule reminders (i.e., injunctive norms) marginally reduced minor…

Social Responsibility as Displacement of Capitalism: Evidences from Banks in Brazil
2007
The purpose of the study is to understand the dynamics of institutionalizing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in the Field of Banking Organizations in Brazil. By means of a social analytical model proposed by Boltanski & Chiapello (1999), and retrieving the conceptual bases of the institutional approach and using the notion of interest in Bourdieu (1996), we arrived at an analytical model that enabled us to understand CSR as part of a movement to displace capitalism. We defend the theory that when institutionalizing CSR, the actions are justifiable in terms of the common good, legitimizing it by tests and structural arrangements while at the same time serving interests inherent to the …
