On Common Sense, Estimation, and the Soul’s Unity in Avicenna

2020

This paper addresses two questions related to Themistius’ alleged influence on Avicenna’s theory of the common sense. The first question concerns the phenomenon of incidental perception, which Themistius explained by means of the common sense. For Avicenna, on the contrary, the explanation of cases like our perceiving something yellow as honey involves the faculty of estimation and the entire system of the internal senses that he coined, and this results in an analysis that is considerably more complex than Themistius’. The second question concerns Themistius’ claim according to which an incorporeal spirit is the primary subject of perception. I argue that Avicenna departs from such a view …

Effects of medication, treatment, and behavioral beliefs on intentions to take medication in patients with familial hypercholesterolemia

2018

Although familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) can be effectively managed using cholesterol-lowering medication, patients often fall short of complete treatment adherence. Identifying the psychological factors associated with self-regulation of FH medication is important to inform interventions to maximize adherence. The aim of the present study was to test an integrated psychological model in predicting FH patients' intentions to take medication.FH patients attending clinics in seven countries were invited to participate in a cross-sectional survey study. Consenting patients (N = 551) completed self-report measures of generalized beliefs about medication overuse and harms, beliefs in treatmen…

Olemuserosta aste-eroon. Filosofianhistoriallinen katsaus eläimen ja ihmisen välisestä suhteesta.

2012

In this paper, we argue that the classical conception concerning the relation between animals and humans in Western philosophy is anthropocentric. Notwithstanding the traditional outlook which has emphasized the substantial difference between animal and human intellect, we contend that this classical position has been overturned during the epistemological-evolutionist shift culminated in the 18th and 19th centuries. The paper is constructed in the following way. First, we shall survey the classical, anthropocentric position which includes roughly the time line from antiquity to early modern period. Second, we will analyze Hume’s epistemological arguments which undermine the uniqueness of hu…

The common sense model of illness self-regulation : a conceptual review and proposed extended model

2021

The common sense model of illness self-regulation outlines the dynamic processes by which individuals perceive, interpret, and respond to health threats and illness-related information. An extended version of the model is proposed, which specifies additional constructs and processes to explain how lay perceptions of health threats impact coping responses and health-related outcomes. The extended model provides detail on: (a) the mediating process by which individuals’ illness representations relate to illness outcomes through adoption of coping procedures; (b) how illness representations are activated by presentation of health-threatening stimuli; (c) behavioral and treatment beliefs as det…
