Using Finnish upper court records as a source, this article is concerned with parental child homicides, newborn infanticides excluded, committed in Finland in the period 1810 to 1860. It focuses on the development in the rate and geographical distribution of these crimes, as well as the social and gendered distribution of the perpetrators. This information forms the basis for analyzing the connection between the motivation for the crime and the pauperization that culminated in these decades as a result of a rapid population growth, which manifested itself in an increase in the landless agrarian proletariat. As with all empirical chapters it explores several key themes in relation to food charity in Finland: • the history of food charity in the national context and the relationship between the welfare state and charities; • the nature of and drivers behind contemporary food charity provision; • key changes in social policy and their impact on rising charitable food provision; • and the social justice implications of increasing need for charitable assistance with food. Ammatillisen lisensiaatintutkimuksen tehtävänä on selvittää, mihin köyhien lapsiperheiden vanhemmat luottavat. Tutkimuksessa luottamus määritellään arjessa toimimista helpottavana suhteena, kuten esimerkiksi koettuna tukena tai yhteenkuuluvuutena. Tutkimuksen aineistona on 42 lapsiperheen vanhemman kirjoittamaa Arkipäivän kokemuksia köyhyydestä –kirjoituskilpailuun osallistunutta kirjoitusta. Kirjoittajat asuvat Etelä-Suomessa kaupunkimaisissa kunnissa ja heistä naisia on kolmekymmentäkahdeksan ja miehiä neljä. Tutkielmassa tarkastellaan köyhyydestä pois pääsemistä. Tarkemmin selvitetään sitä, mikä mahdollistaa köyhyydestä pois pääsemisen ja mitä köyhyydestä selvinneet ihmiset kirjoittavat elämästään köyhyyden jälkeen. Suomalaisessa yhteiskunnassa tuloerot ovat olleet kasvussa 1990-luvulta lähtien, jolloin hyvin pärjäävien ohella myös köyhyysloukussa elävien määrä lisääntyy jatkuvasti. Köyhyydessä eläminen usein vähentää ihmisen hyvinvointia, heikentää voimavaroja ja tätä kautta kaventaa hänen toimintamahdollisuuksiaan. Tähän etnografiseen tutkimukseen on haastateltu seitsemää pitopalveluosuuskunnan jäsentä Addis Abebassa, Etiopiassa. Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan haastateltavien pääasiallisia puutteen ja huolen aiheita, ja heidän henkilökohtaisia selviytymisstrategioitaan urbaanissa köyhyydessä. Kuinka ihmiset määrittelevät ja kokevat erilaiset päivittäiset puutteen ja huolen aiheensa? Mitä voimavaroja haastateltavat voivat käyttää selviytyäkseen urbaanissa köyhyydessä?
