Chiral Instabilities and the Onset of Chiral Turbulence in QED Plasmas
2020
We present a first principles study of chiral plasma instabilities and the onset of chiral turbulence in QED plasmas far from equilibrium. By performing classical-statistical lattice simulations of the microscopic theory, we show that the generation of strong helical magnetic fields from a helicity imbalance in the fermion sector proceeds via three distinct phases. During the initial linear instability regime the helicity imbalance of the fermion sector causes an exponential growth(damping) of magnetic field modes with right(left) handed polarization, for which we extract the characteristic growth (damping) rates. Secondary growth of unstable modes accelerates the helicity transfer from fer…
Unraveling the Role of the Rh–ZrO2 Interface in the Water–Gas-Shift Reaction via a First-Principles Microkinetic Study
2018
The industrially important water–gas-shift (WGS) reaction is a complex network of competing elementary reactions in which the catalyst is a multicomponent system consisting of distinct domains. Herein, we have combined density functional theory calculations with microkinetic modeling to explore the active phase, kinetics, and reaction mechanism of the WGS over the Rh–ZrO2 interface. We have explicitly considered the support and metal and their interface and find that the Rh–ZrO2 interface is far more active toward WGS than Rh(111) facets, which are susceptible to CO poisoning. CO2 forming on the zirconia support rapidly transforms into formate. These findings demonstrate the central role of…
Complexes of HXeY with HX (Y, X = F, Cl, Br, I) : Symmetry-Adapted Perturbation Theory Study and Anharmonic Vibrational Analysis
2023
A comprehensive analysis of the intermolecular interaction energy and anharmonic vibrations of 41 structures of the HXeY· · · HX (X, Y = F, Cl, Br, I) family of noble-gas-compound complexes for all possible combinations of Y and X was conducted. New structures were identified, and their interaction energies were studied by means of symmetry-adapted perturbation theory, up to secondorder corrections: this provided insight into the physical nature of the interaction in the complexes. The energy components were discussed, in connection to anharmonic frequency analysis. The results show that the induction and dispersion corrections were the main driving forces of the interaction, and that their…

Effect of Tire-Char Ash on the Extent of Synergy during CO2 Cogasification with Hydrochar from Potassium-Rich Coconut Fiber
2020
The influence of inherent tire char ash during co-gasification with coconut hydrochar prepared at different intensities was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis to ascertain the extent to which synergistic interaction, reactivity, and activation energy reduction were altered. High-ash tire tread (TT) and low-ash sidewall (SW) both exhibited enhanced synergy, reactivity, and activation reduction upon co-gasification with hydrochars; however, the extent of promotion was more pronounced in SW-hydrochar blends. This difference was caused by the inhibiting nature of TT inherent ash, particularly the role of Si-containing compounds. Inhibition in TT-hydrochar blends was mainly due to the pr…
The emission reduction potentials of First Generation Electric Aircraft (FGEA) in Finland
2020
Under the looming climate crisis, aviation needs to find new solutions to cut its greenhouse gas emissions. One pathway towards zero emissions is the use of electric aircraft. While current battery technology will not allow for medium and long-haul flights at full capacity, on short-haul routes First Generation Electric Aircraft (FGEA) could play a significant role in the near future. Current FGEA under development could carry 9–19 passengers on distances of 400–1046 km by 2025. This study focuses on the emissions reduction potentials of FGEA in Finland. It compares the carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2-eq) emissions and real travel times (RTT) from door-to-door of FGEA on 47 routes with exist…

Studying the double-frequency heating mode in ECRIS plasma using Kα diagnostics
2018
Despite the success of double-heating frequency in enhancing high charge state production, the underlying physics remains poorly understood. By combining three different diagnostic techniques i.e. Kα emission, optical emission and the extracted charge state distribution, it is now possible to assess the proposed explanations for the effectiveness of double-frequency heating against the experimental results. These results seem to indicate that the increase of plasma density accounts largely for the favorable behavior of this operation mode compared to single-frequency mode. peerReviewed
