Sosiaalinen kestävyys suomalaisessa kaivannaisteollisuudessa: yhteiset kaivannaisemme? : tapaustutkimus Soklin kaivoshankkeesta
2016
Tämän tutkielman tarkoitus on selvittää, kuinka sosiaalisesti kestävää kaivannaisalan toiminta Suomessa on. Tarkastelu nivotaan commons-käsitteen ympärille kysyen, koetaanko kaivannaiset meille yhteiseksi paikallisella ja kansallisella tasolla. Tutkimuskysymyksiä tarkastellaan kahdella eri tasolla kahta eri aineistoa käyttäen. Media- aineisto Lapin Kansasta kertoo paikallisen tason tarinaa sieltä, missä kaivostoimintaa harjoitetaan ja asiakirja-aineiston kahdesta valtiollisesta strategiasta kertoo kansallista visiota, kansallista tahtotilaa kaivannaisalan tulevaisuudesta. Tutkielman tuloksista voidaan päätellä, että aineistot kertovat kahta erilaista tarinaa, joskin metatasolla niistä löyty…
Kaustisen seutukunnan kaivos- ja tuulivoimahankkeiden taloudellisten kokonaisvaikutusten ennakkoarviointi
2019
Kaustisen seutukunnassa on lähivuosina käynnistymässä neljä uutta luonnonvarojen hyödyntämiseen tähtäävää suurhanketta – litiumkaivoshanke Kaustisella ja tuulivoimapuistohankkeet Halsualla, Lestijärvellä ja Toholammilla. Hankkeiden investointiarvo on koko laajuudessaan jopa 1,5 miljardia euroa ja pysyvät työvoimavaikutukset vähintään satoja henkilötyövuosia. Tämän raportin tarkoituksena on esittää laskelmia näiden suurhankkeiden taloudellisista kokonaisvaikutuksista. Laskelmat tukevat omalta osaltaan sitä työtä, jolla pyritään varmistamaan, että investoinnit tuottaisivat mahdollisimman paljon lisäarvoa elinkeinoelämän kasvuun ja kuntien talouden parantumiseen seutukunnassa. Laskelmien tarko…
Condition and Sperm Characteristics of Perch Perca fluviatilis inhabiting Boreal Lakes Receiving Metal Mining Effluents.
2020
AbstractOne of the world’s largest, but low-grade, sulfide nickel deposits in northeastern Finland has been exploited by a bioheapleaching technology since 2008. Bioheapleaching is a relatively new, cost-effective technology, but humid climate, e.g., in boreal temperate environments, causes challenges to the management of the water balance in the ore heaps with wide catchment area, and the mining effluents have caused substantial metal and salting contamination of the receiving waterbodies. In our study, the impacts of metal-extracting bioheapleaching mine effluents on muscle and liver element concentrations, body condition, liver and testes mass, and sperm count and motility of male perch …
Metallimalmikaivosten vesistövaikutukset : esimerkkinä Talvivaaran kaivoksen sulfaatti-, natrium- ja mangaanipäästöt
2013
Mining industry is expanding in Finland and it is expected to become a forerunner in taking environmental issues into account in its processes. Mines often lower the water quality of their surrounding waters and this may lead to salinization and eutrophication for instance. Salinization may be due to dissolved ions in the wastewater, like sulphate and sodium, and may cause the artificial stratification of a lake. Sulphate can also prevent the natural circulation of iron in the sediments, which favors the release of phosphorus and could lead to eutrophication. All impacts cannot be assessed in advance and not enough studies have been made concerning these substances. The Talvivaara mine in S…
Toxicity of biomining effluents to Daphnia magna: Acute toxicity and transcriptomic biomarkers
2018
Increasing metal consumption is driving the introduction of new techniques such as biomining to exploit low grade ores. The biomining impacts notably aquatic ecosystems, yet, the applicability of ecotoxicological tests to study the complex mixture effects of mining waters is insufficiently understood. The aim of the present work was to test if transcriptomic biomarkers are suitable and sensitive for the ecotoxicity assessment of biomining affected waters. The study site had been affected by a multimetal biomine, and the studied water samples formed a concentration gradient of contamination downstream from the biomining site. Cadmium and nickel were used as positive controls in the toxicity …

Abundant and diverse arsenic‐metabolizing microorganisms in peatlands treating arsenic‐contaminated mining wastewaters
2020
Mining operations produce large quantities of wastewater. At a mine site in Northern Finland, two natural peatlands are used for the treatment of mining‐influenced waters with high concentrations of sulfate and potentially toxic arsenic (As). In the present study, As removal and the involved microbial processes in those treatment peatlands (TPs) were assessed. Arsenic‐metabolizing microorganisms were abundant in peat soil from both TPs (up to 108 cells gdw‐1), with arsenate respirers being about 100 times more abundant than arsenite oxidizers. In uninhibited microcosm incubations, supplemented arsenite was oxidized under oxic conditions and supplemented arsenate was reduced under anoxic con…
Analysis of socio-economic impact of Konkola Copper Mine (KCM) on the mining community in Zambia : a case study of Chingola Town
2008
This thesis focuses on the impact of Konkola Copper Mine (KCM). This company is a Multinational Mining Corporation. It is based in Chingola town in Zambia. The study seeks to establish whether the Mining company is contributing to the development of the town or not. It also examines the development agreements which the company entered into with government and show how this commitment has affected the company’s contributions to the local community. Specifically, the study seeks to critically examine the development agreements with a view to establishing whether these agreements emphasized strict observance of corporate social responsibilities or not The methodological approach used in this s…
