Charge Radii of ^{55,56}Ni Reveal a Surprisingly Similar Behavior at N=28 in Ca and Ni Isotopes.

Nuclear charge radii of $^{55,56}$Ni were measured by collinear laserspectroscopy. The obtained information completes the behavior of the chargeradii at the shell closure of the doubly magic nucleus $^{56}$Ni. The trend ofcharge radii across the shell closures in calcium and nickel is surprisinglysimilar despite the fact that the $^{56}$Ni core is supposed to be much softerthan the $^{48}$Ca core. The very low magnetic moment$\mu(^{55}\mathrm{Ni})=-1.108(20)\,\mu_N$ indicates the impact of M1excitations between spin-orbit partners across the $N,Z=28$ shell gaps. Towards purely inorganic clusters in medicine: Biocompatible divalent cations as counterions of cobaltabis(dicarbollide) and its iodinated derivatives

Monovalent cations, Cs+, and alkylammonium ([NR4]+) salts have traditionally been used to precipitate the anions of boranes, carborane and metallocarborane clusters. In contrast, in the body and in living organisms in general, divalent cations have a special relevance. In this work, we isolate for the first time the cobaltabis(dicarbollide) salts of the biocompatible divalent cations of biological importance that can have application both in biology and in materials science. The preparation of Ca2+, Mg2+ and Fe2+ salts of anionic iodinated nido-[C2B9H12]− and cobaltabis(dicarbollide) as well as its di-, tetra- and octa-iodinated derivatives are reported. Measurement of the double-beta decay half-life and search for the neutrinoless double-beta decay of Ca48 with the NEMO-3 detector

The NEMO-3 experiment at the Modane Underground Laboratory investigates the double-beta decay of Ca48. Using 5.25 yr of data recorded with a 6.99 g sample of Ca48, approximately 150 double-beta decay candidate events are selected with a signal-to-background ratio greater than 3. The half-life for the two-neutrino double-beta decay of Ca48 is measured to be T2ν1/2=[6.4+0.7−0.6(stat)+1.2−0.9(syst)]×1019  yr. A search for neutrinoless double-beta decay of Ca48 yields a null result, and a corresponding lower limit on the half-life is found to be T0ν1/2>2.0×1022  yr at 90% confidence level, translating into an upper limit on the effective Majorana neutrino mass of ⟨mββ⟩<6.0–26  eV, with the rang…

Understanding altered contractile properties in advanced age : insights from a systematic muscle modelling approach

Age-related alterations of skeletal muscle are numerous and present inconsistently, and the effect of their interaction on contractile performance can be nonintuitive. Hill-type muscle models predict muscle force according to well-characterised contractile phenomena. Coupled with simple, yet reasonably realistic activation dynamics, such models consist of parameters that are meaningfully linked to fundamental aspects of muscle excitation and contraction.
