Complexity in project co-creation of knowledge for innovation
2020
The European Union (EU) promotes collaboration across functions and borders in its funded innovation projects, which are seen as complex collaboration to co-create knowledge. This requires the engagement of multiple stakeholders throughout the duration of the project. To probe complexity in EU-funded innovation projects the research question is: How does complexity affect the co-creation of knowledge in innovation projects, according to project participants? The data for this study was collected from project experts in the form of short narratives, using a questionnaire based on the elements of complexity of Mitleton-Kelly (2003). The results indicate that complexity characterises the co-cr…
Network embeddedness in the internationalization of biotechnology entrepreneurs
2018
This study investigates how entrepreneurs of biotech enterprises embed in domestic and international networks so as to internationalize. We advance a contextual framework of embeddedness of internationalizing entrepreneurs, providing a contribution (i) by synthesizing and applying existing conceptual insights from the networking literature to provide a more culturally sensitive view of getting embedded for international entrepreneurship in the biotech industry and (ii) by adding insights into the practices and (micro)processes of how and in what ways embeddedness integrates with the internationalization of biotech entrepreneurs. Our study involves six entrepreneurs from Canada, Finland, and…
Institutional distance and international networking
2017
We focus on how small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) adapt to differences in institutional logics (values, beliefs, and rules) in their networking when they enter an institutionally distant market. We address gaps in the literature, relating to the role of institutional logics in SME internationalization, and how institutional distance affects the formation of network ties. We show how the social interaction involved in internationalization is embedded in the institutional logics followed by partnering actors. Specifically, we demonstrate how institutional distance may constrain the networking activities of SMEs and identify practices that may support successful internationalization. …
Cross-country variation in patience, persistent current account imbalances and the external wealth of nations
2022
This paper is the first to utilize large-scale international surveys on economic preferences to examine the long-run relationships between patience, current accounts and external wealth. We find robust empirical evidence that countries with more patient individuals tend to run persistent current account surpluses, which in turn result in the accumulation of foreign assets. This theoretically plausible but empirically unexplored relationship holds true for euro area current account imbalances, global current account imbalances and net foreign asset positions worldwide. While the existing current account literature concentrates on proximate macroeconomic determinants, this paper’s extension o…
Within and between firm trends in job polarization : the roles of globalization and technology
2019
AbstractWe analyze occupational polarization within and across firms using a census of matched employer–employee panel data from Finland in the period of 2000–2014. As in most industrialized countries, the Finnish occupational distribution has polarized over the last decades. Using decomposition analysis, we find that jobs involving low-level service tasks increase mostly through the entry dynamics, while the high-level abstract task share increases largely within continuing firms. Worker-level occupational mobility points to some skill upgrading within continuing firms, while labor force entry and retirement contribute the polarizing trend. Instrumental variables (IVs) regressions confirm …
Effects of the European Monetary Union on High-Technology Exports
2021
AbstractOur study estimates the effects of the European Monetary Union (EMU) on high-technology (HT) export and assesses the potential knowledge spillovers of such trade. Irrespective of the importance of the HT trade channel, none of the previous studies in the literature focus on the effects of a common currency on HT trade. Increasing trade in the HT sector may lead to more efficient use of resources and help countries to move towards a knowledge-based economy. Moreover, it may lead to higher overall growth. After considering multilateral resistances, pair fixed effects and bias correction in the preferred (three-way bias-corrected) model, EMU membership becomes negative and statisticall…
Do commodity assets hedge uncertainties? What we learn from the recent turbulence period?
2022
AbstractThis study analyses the impact of different uncertainties on commodity markets to assess commodity markets' hedging or safe-haven properties. Using time-varying dynamic conditional correlation and wavelet-based Quantile-on-Quantile regression models, our findings show that, both before and during the COVID-19 crisis, soybeans and clean energy stocks offer strong safe-haven opportunities against cryptocurrency price uncertainty and geopolitical risks (GPR). Soybean markets weakly hedge cryptocurrency policy uncertainty, US economic policy uncertainty, and crude oil volatility. In addition, GSCI commodity and crude oil also offer a weak safe-haven property against cryptocurrency uncer…

Budjettipuhe valtaa eduskunnan : kansanedustajien budjettipuheenvuorot vallankäytön välineenä
2010
Tutkielmani lähtökohta on eduskunnan lukujen valossa vaatimaton budjettivalta. Kolmen kuukauden prosessissa eduskunta lisää hallituksen alkuperäiseen esitykseen noin promillen suuruisen rahamäärän. Keskeinen kysymys kuuluu, toimiiko eduskunta tehottomasti. Perusteellisemmassa tarkastelussa nousee voimakkaasti esille myös parlamentin puhevalta. Tulevaisuuden tarpeiden korostaminen budjettipuheissa on keskeinen vallankäytön muoto. Se on eduskunnan kontrollivaltaa suhteessa hallitukseen. Teoreettisen kirjallisuuden lisäksi tutkimusaineistoni muodostuu vuonna 2009 eduskunnassa pidetyistä budjettipuheenvuoroista. Tekstin luentatapana pyrin käyttämään erottelujen, luokittelujen ja erilaisten puhu…
Taistelu turvallisuuden tulkinnasta : turvallisuuspolitiikan diskursiivisuus ja turvallistaminen Suomen eduskunnassa 1995 ja 2004
2007
Tutkielma tarkastelee Suomen turvallisuuspoliittisen keskustelun turvallisuusdiskursseja ja erilaisten tulkintarepertuaarien käyttöä turvallisuuskysymysten tulkinnassa. Tutkimuksen tehtävänä on selvittää, millä tavalla turvallisuuspolitiikan alueellistuminen ja globalisoituminen ilmenee turvallisuuspoliittisessa keskustelussa ja erityisesti tarkastella kylmän sodan aikana muodostuneen valtion sotilaallisen turvallisuuden korostamisen suhdetta näihin kehityskulkuihin. Tutkielmassa turvallisuuspoliittista keskustelua lähestytään turvallisuuden luonteesta poliittisena käsitteenä ja keskustelu jäsennetään erilaisten valtiojärjestelmän kansainvälisten suhteiden teorioiden kautta valtioiden välis…
