One of the best known Cold War era conflict in the sporting field – or in this case in the pool – was the Melbourne games’ water polo semifinal between Hungary and the USSR, played on 6 December. In international sports literature the event is known as the “blood in the water” match. The Hungarian uprising which had begun in October and was still continuing when the semifinalists met formed the background context for the bloody match which the Hungarians won 4–0. This article scrutinizes the conceptual history of international anarchy. The argument purported here is that even though the idea of international anarchy is often seen as very central for the academic discipline of international relations, the concept is in fact not found from the forerunners or classics of the discipline. The assumption of international anarchy is commonly seen as a defining feature of a Realist school of international relations. The Supranational Dimension in Max Weber’s Vision of Politics

Max Weber analyzed politics from the perspective of Chancen for actors, and he never separated world politics from domestic politics. The “Westphalian balance” between great European powers shaped Weber’s views on international polity. However, he also regarded Western individualism, human rights, and parliamentary democracy as necessary qualities to possess in order to be recognized as a great power. This vision provided the basis for his wartime critique of the expansionist tendencies in German foreign policy and for his demand for the parliamentarization of German politics.
