Preliminary study on the unusual properties in the habitat of Ranunculetum baudotii in Central Europe

Abstract The study examines the patches of the saltwater association Ranunculetum baudotii in a new, atypical site; i.e., located more than 400 km away from the Baltic coastal line. They were found in a karst spring, and were the first locality of the community identified in Poland. The water and sediments within the patches were analyzed chemically in the laboratory, but, conductivity, water temperature and O2 content were measured in the field. Karst systems represent the main drinking water source for 20-25% of world’s population, although covering only 7-10% of the global land surface (Ford & Williams, 2007). Karst aquifers are highly vulnerable to external pollution, so their protection and management is of critical importance to sustain water resources. In Greece, starting from the 1970’s, water demands for agricultural, domestic and industrial use increased significantly, mainly in coastal areas (Daskalaki & Voudouris, 2008). Lentinulas edodes ekstrakta ietekme uz Drosophila melanogaster kāpuru ūdeņraža peroksīda stresa rezistenci

Darbā pētīta šitakē sēnes karsta ūdens ekstrakta aktivitāte ūdeņraža peroksīda izraisīta stresa gadījumā, kā modeļorganismu izmantojot - augļu mušu. Pētījumā drozofilu kāpuri audzēti barotnēs ar šitakē sēnes karsta ūdens ekstrakta piedevu, kur etanola izgulsnējamās frakcijas sausnes daudzumu sastādīja – 0,000%, 0,001%, 0,003%, 0,007%, 0,015%, 0,030%, 0,060% un 0,100% no tilpuma. No barotnes atdalīti L3 stadijas kāpuri, kas 24 stundas pakļauti 50mM ūdeņraža peroksīdam. Novērotas ūdeņraža peroksīda izraisītas izmaiņas apskatītajos parametros – samazināts mutes orgāna kustību skaits, redzami zarnu traktu bojājumi, palielināta superoksīda dismutāzes aktivitāte, samazināta izdzīvotība līdz kūniņ…

Bakalaura darbā veikts šitakē sēnes karsta ūdens ekstraktu imunomodulātorās aktivitātes novērtējums in vivo kā modeli izmantojot augļu mušas kāpura stadiju. Drozofilu kāpuru savairošana veikta barotnēs ar šitakē sēnes piedevu, kur etanola izgulsnējamās frakcijas sausnes koncentrācija veidoja – 0,000%, 0,001%, 0,003%, 0,007%, 0,015%, 0,030%, 0,060% un 0,100% no kopējā barotnes tilpuma. Imūnās atbildes novērtējums veikts L3 attīstības stadiju sasniegušiem kāpuriem. Carbon dynamics in highly heterotrophic subarctic thaw ponds

Abstract. Global warming has accelerated the formation of permafrost thaw ponds in several subarctic and arctic regions. These ponds are net heterotrophic as evidenced by their greenhouse gas (GHG) supersaturation levels (CO2 and CH4), and generally receive large terrestrial carbon inputs from the thawing and eroding permafrost. We measured seasonal and vertical variations in the concentration and type of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in five subarctic thaw (thermokarst) ponds in northern Quebec, and explored how environmental gradients influenced heterotrophic and phototrophic biomass and productivity.
