Birth Size and Childhood Growth as Determinants of Physical Functioning in Older Age: The Helsinki Birth Cohort Study
2011
The study reports on the associations of infant and childhood anthropometric measurements, early growth, and the combined effect of birth weight and childhood body mass index with older age physical functioning among 1,999 individuals born in 1934–1944 and belonging to the Helsinki Birth Cohort Study. Physical functioning was assessed by the Short Form 36 scale. Anthropometric data from infancy and childhood were retrieved from medical records. The risk of lower Short Form 36 physical functioning at the mean age of 61.6 years was increased for those with birth weight less than 2.5 kg compared with those weighing 3.0–3.5 kg at birth (odds ratio (OR) = 2.73, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.57…
Diminishing benefits of urban living for children and adolescents’ growth and development
2023
Optimal growth and development in childhood and adolescence is crucial for lifelong health and well-being 1-6. Here we used data from 2,325 population-based studies, with measurements of height and weight from 71 million participants, to report the height and body-mass index (BMI) of children and adolescents aged 5-19 years on the basis of rural and urban place of residence in 200 countries and territories from 1990 to 2020. In 1990, children and adolescents residing in cities were taller than their rural counterparts in all but a few high-income countries. By 2020, the urban height advantage became smaller in most countries, and in many high-income western countries it reversed into a smal…
Height and body-mass index trajectories of school-aged children and adolescents from 1985 to 2019 in 200 countries and territories: a pooled analysis…
2020
BACKGROUND: Comparable global data on health and nutrition of school-aged children and adolescents are scarce. We aimed to estimate age trajectories and time trends in mean height and mean body-mass index (BMI), which measures weight gain beyond what is expected from height gain, for school-aged children and adolescents.
Human resource development practices supporting creativity in Finnish growth organizations
2020
Creativity can be enhanced through appropriate Human Resource Development (HRD) practices that support employees’ learning and competence development. The aim of this study is to increase our understanding of HRD practices that enhance creativity in Finnish growth companies. To achieve this aim, we searched for creativity requirements based on employees’ experiences expressed in interviews, and we studied HRD practices used in organizations that respond to the requirements of creativity. We gathered 98 interviews from personnel in technology, industrial and artistic design organizations and utilized them for a theory‐driven content analysis to identify the variety of requirements for creati…
Vascular endothelial growth factor-A and platelet-derived growth factor-B combination gene therapy prolongs angiogenic effects via recruitment of int…
2008
Vessel stabilization and the inhibition of side effects such as tissue edema are essential in angiogenic gene therapy. Thus, combination gene transfers stimulating both endothelial cell and pericyte proliferation have become of interest. However, there is currently little data to support combination gene transfer in large animal models. In this study, we evaluated the potential advantages of such a strategy by combining the transfer of adenoviral (Ad) vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-A and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF)-B into rabbit hindlimb skeletal muscle. AdLacZ alone or in combination with AdVEGF-A were used as controls. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound, modified Miles assa…
Kasvun tekijät : tutkimus Suomen teollistumisen ajan perustajayrittäjistä 1870-1990
2017
Company founders are important agents in business economics. I investigated entrepreneurs who founded successful, long-standing and high-growth companies. The data include 402 Finnish founder entrepreneurs who had founded a company and had been awarded the Finnish title of neuvos during the period 1917-2015 (i.e., since the beginning of Finnish independence). So far only few longitudinal studies have been presented on company founders in Finland. This study focuses on the era of industrialism in Finland and addresses the following research questions. First, what kind of entrepreneur groups are identified in different phases of industrialism when studying the backgrounds, education and work …
Backcasting for desirable futures in Finnish forest-based firms
2020
Purpose In Finland, new forest-based sector (FBS) businesses are seen as important for the transition to the circular bioeconomy. The purpose of this study is to explore the transition of Finnish FBS companies to new business models. The aim is to understand how FBS companies define their ideal future states and related business models for the year 2030. Design/methodology/approach This study uses thematic interviews with managers from various FBS firms and companies from interfacing sectors. In the interviews, the key idea of backcasting was pursued when respondents discussed the desirable future states of their business. Findings The effort to achieve growth of the business and the appea…

Myostatin and related proteins on the control of skeletal muscle mass and capillary density
2013
Skeletal muscle wasting is a feature of many pathological conditions such as muscular dystrophies, cancer and diabetes. Human ageing also results in the progressive loss of muscle mass and strength, a condition known as sarcopenia (or myopenia). Therefore, interventions that can reverse or slow down muscle loss are highly desirable. The TGF-β member myostatin is a well-known inhibitor of skeletal muscle growth, but it may also, if deleted, decrease muscle oxidative capacity. We have used the activin receptor 2B (ActR2B) fused to the Fc region of immunoglobulin G (ActR2B-Fc) as a trap to sequester myostatin and inhibit its activity. We sought to evaluate possible differences between doses an…
Otoliitin kasvutapa verrattuna somaattisesti kasvavaan luutumaan ja sen vaikutus kasvun takautuvaan määritykseen otoliitista ahvenella (Perca fluviat…
2013
Kalojen kasvaessa myös luut ja suomut kasvavat. Kalan suomuihin muodostuu kasvurenkaita, joista yhdessä syntyy vuosikasvuvyöhyke. Kalan muissa luutumissa on havaittavissa kasvua ilmentävät vyöhykkeet. Kalan pituuskasvua voidaan määrittää takautuvasti näistä kalan suomuissa ja luutumissa ilmenevistä kasvurenkaista. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää, kuinka luotettavasti ja millä varauksilla otoliittia on mahdollista käyttää takautuvassa kasvunmäärityksessä ahvenella (Perca fluviatilis L.), kasvunopeudeltaan erilaisilla populaatioilla. Tarkoituksena oli löytää otoliitista parhaiten somaattista kasvua myötäilevä linja. Vertailukohtana käytettiin kiduskannen operculum-luuta. Lisäksi…
