"The wrathful sunset glared...": The Krakatoa Sunsets in Victorian Science and Art

The eruption of Krakatoa on August 27, 1883 was an event both tragic and spectacular. Thousands of lives were lost; sea waves and atmospheric disturbances were detected around the globe. Billions of tons of volcanic ash were thrown into the atmosphere producing multi-coloured sunsets caused by the scattering of light by aerosol particles. The paper discusses the ways in which these so-called Krakatoa sunsets, which were experienced by most of the world, were reflected in Victorian scientific and artistic discourse. The present paper aims at showing that there are times when set theoretical knowledge increases in a non-cumulative way. In other words, what we call ‘set theory’ is not one theory which grows by simple addition of a theorem after the other, but a finite sequence of theories T1, ..., T n in which Ti+1, for 1 ≤ i < n, supersedes T i . This thesis has a great philosophical significance because it implies that there is a sense in which mathematical theories, like the theories belonging to the empirical sciences, are fallible and that, consequently, mathematical knowledge has a quasi-empirical nature. Im Rahmen der Phraseologieforschung haben Kollokationen traditionell nur wenig Beachtung gefunden. Im Gegensatz zu Idiomen sind sie in der Regel semantisch transparent und bereiten daher Fremdsprachenlernern selten rezeptive Schwierigkeiten. Bei der Textproduktion muss jedoch die Problematik der Kollokationen beachtet werden. Aus diesem Grund halten wir Kollokationen für einen wichtigen Bereich der Phraseologie. Bakalaura darbā “Termālā komforta līmenis ekstrēmu meteoroloģisko epizožu gadījumā. Rīgas centra piemērs” izmantojot 2018. gada vasarā Rīgas centrā piecos monitoringa punktos veiktos relatīvā mitruma un gaisa temperatūras mērījumus apkopota ekstrēmi karstu epizožu norise. Rezultāti salīdzināti ar ilgtermiņa novērojumu vidējiem rādītājiem, aprēķināti dažādi termālo komfortu raksturojošie indikatori, kas nereti atbilstošāk raksturo cilvēka pašsajūtu. Termālā komforta indikatoru aprēķini veikti izmantojot vidējos populācijas raksturlielumus, termālās izolācijas rādītājus un aktivitāti. Aprēķiniem izmantota specializēta programma RayMan.
