ABSTRACTThe early fiction of a novelist and journalist born in the north of Finland, Reino Rinne (1913–2002), is illustrative of the post-war interest in a redefinition of cultural belonging. The aim of this article is to offer a reading of Rinne’s works that throws light on the way they exemplify a post-war articulation of affective localism. What is especially characteristic of the affective localism produced in Rinne’s early fiction is the deployment of certain narrative elements, realism as an aesthetic regime, tropes of spatial belonging and historical myths that are endowed with affective charge. This article discusses reading circles of adult Finnish as a second language (L2) readers. The books that were read and discussed in the circles were easy-to-read fiction. The study focuses on how the readers interpret what they read and what kind of support they need for their interpretations. The analysis utilizes the concept of scaffolding, used in socio-cultural learning theory. The readers’ reading stances vary from what is literally said in the text to creating their own interpretations of the hidden meanings of the text. Tarkastelen pro gradu -tutkielmassani fiktiivisten henkilöhahmojen tajunnankuvausta Markku Pääskysen romaanissa Vastaavuuksia (Tammi, 2008). Lähtökohta tutkimuksessani on, että kirjallista mieltä ei tule ymmärtää vain kertomuksen maailmaan ja yhteen kokijaan rajoittuvana ilmiönä, vaan asiat on yhdistettävä laajemmaksi kokonaisuudeksi. Kertoja, tarinamaailman henkilöt sekä lukija osallistuvat ja tuovat oman osansa samaan kognitiiviseen toimintaan: mielten konstruointiin ja samalla niiden luentaan.
