Tämä työ on kommentoitu käännös Juha-Pekka Koskisen Seitsemäs Temppeliherra teoksen otteista. Työ suoritettiin kääntämällä otteet L1-kielestä L2-kieleen (suomesta englanniksi). Tutkimus pitää sisällään sekä kommentoidun käännöksen että analyyttisia työkaluja kääntämisprosessin mahdollisimman tarkkaan kuvaukseen. Tämä saavutettiin pääosin hyödyntämällä Hans Vermeerin skopos-teoriaa, Christiane Nordin funktionalistista lähestymistapaa käännösvirheisiin, Hilaire Bellocin hyvä käännöksen määritelmää sekä Andre Lefeveren laatimaa käännöksiin liittyvien ongelmien kategorisointia. Olen tutkinut pro gradu –työssäni erisnimien käännöksiä Lucy Maud Montgomeryn Annan nuoruusvuodet –teoksessa. Aineistoni muodostavat teoksen alkuperäinen englanninkielinen versio, 1920-luvulla käännetty suomenkielinen käännös sekä 1960-luvulla tehty uudistettu käännös. Käännetty teksti on aina jonkun kääntäjän tekemä, ja kääntäjän henkilökohtainen historia ja ajatusmaailma vaikuttavat käännöksen muotoutumiseen. Onkin syytä tutkia, millaisia muutoksia teksti ylipäänsä ja erityisesti nimistö kokevat käännösprosessissa. The following study is part of my research work on self-reflection in literary translation. Using this case study, I intend to present the aspects and dilemmas faced by literary translators attempting to gauge the success of their work. My baseline questions were: Is the success or failure of a translation solution always determinable? What external and internal expectations must be observed, and to what extent? This article discusses the potential of a fictional story, a novel, to challenge political narratives in a divided society. I will analyse three novels set during the ”Troubles” (1960s-1998) in Northern Ireland, looking at the ways in which each novel navigates the narrow space between Northern Irish unionism and nationalism, the two dominant narratives in Northern Ireland. I will read the novels politically, interpreting them as rhetorical narratives holding the power to challenge commonplace assumptions. Finnish-Swedish artist and writer Tove Jansson (1914–2001), widely known as the author of the Moomin books, was born in Helsinki and resided there for the greater part of her life. The city features as a setting for her adult-oriented fiction – notably, semi-autobiographical fix-up novels Sculptor’s Daughter (1968/2015) and Fair Play (1989/2011). This article adopts a situated approach to literary geography, examining the researcher’s own position as a Helsinki resident and a ‘situated’ reader.
