Physiotherapists’ conceptions of movement awareness– A phenomenographic study

2021

The phenomenon of movement awareness requires more attention to make it explicit in physiotherapy. The aim of this study was to explore the variation in physiotherapists’ conceptions of movement quality, focusing on movement awareness. The informants were 15 physiotherapists from a variety of physiotherapy fields. We collected data through two group interviews and used the phenomenographic method to analyze them. Four themes emerged from the data: 1) Being in contact with one’s own moving body; 2) Increased awareness of movement experiences; 3) Interrelationship between physiotherapist and patient; and 4) Better understanding of movement awareness. These themes varied by four descriptive ca…

P 042 - Gait complexity quantified using inertial measurement units in children with cerebral palsy

2018

Children with cerebral palsy (CP) have various gait impairments, and consequently their gait is less stable compared to typically developed (TD) controls. Gait kinematics are also affected more in CP than TD by concurrent dual and cognitive tasks. Inertial measurement units (IMU) provide efficient tool to quantify gait stability, but the practical value of IMU based gait assessment has not been tested in children with CP. nonPeerReviewed

P 042 - Gait complexity quantified using inertial measurement units in children with cerebral palsy

2018

Abstract Children with cerebral palsy (CP) have gait impairments, and their gait is affected by concurrent tasks. We used inertial measurement units (IMU) to quantify CP-related gait complexity alterations, and identify effects of dual tasks on gait variability from 12 children with CP and 23 typically developed (TD) controls. The data were collected for normal and dual-tasks (motor; carrying a tray, cognitive; word naming) during walking. Step duration and adjusted multiscale entropy (MSE) index were computed. In overall, children with CP had shorter step duration and greater gait complexity than TD. Gait complexity was higher in vertical direction during the cognitive than normal and moto…

Acute effects of wearing compression knee-length socks on ankle joint position sense in community-dwelling older adults

2021

Functional proprioceptive information is required to allow an individual to interact with the environment effectively for everyday activities such as locomotion and object manipulation. Specifically, research suggests that application of compression garments could improve proprioceptive regulation of action by enhancing sensorimotor system noise in individuals of different ages and capacities. However, limited research has been conducted with samples of elderly people thus far. This study aimed to examine acute effects of wearing knee-length socks (KLS) of various compression levels on ankle joint position sense in community-dwelling, older adults. A total of 26 participants (12 male and 14…

Power of lower extremities is most important determinant of agility among physically inactive or active adult people

2018

OBJECTIVE The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to determine the relationships between agility, running speed, jumping height and length, body mass index, self-report pain in back and in lower extremities, personal factors as self-report health and fitness, and leisure time physical activity in physically inactive or active adult people. METHODS Altogether, 233 healthy subjects, 149 women (43.0 ± 7.3 years) and 84 men (44.0 ± 7.7 years), participated into study. Outcome measures were described in the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health domains. RESULTS Multiple regression analysis showed that jumping length explained 24.6% and 15.3% of the variance ass…

Altered hip control during a standing knee-lift test is associated with increased risk of knee injuries

2020

Few prospective studies have investigated hip and pelvic control as a risk factor for lower extremity (LE) injuries. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether deficits in hip and lumbopelvic control during standing knee lift test are associated with increased risk of acute knee and LE injuries in youth team sports. At baseline, 258 basketball and floorball players (aged 12‒21 y.) participated in a standing knee lift test using 3‐dimensional motion analysis. Two trials per leg were recorded from each participant. Peak sagittal plane pelvic tilt and frontal plane pelvic drop/hike were measured. Both continuous and categorical variables were analysed. New non‐contact LE injuries, an…

Evaluating objective measures of impairment to trunk strength and control for cross-country sit skiing

2021

AbstractIn Paralympic cross-country sit skiing, athlete classification is performed by an expert panel, so it may be affected by subjectivity. An evidence-based classification is required, in which objective measures of impairment must be identified. The purposes of this study were: (i) to evaluate the reliability of 5 trunk strength measures and 18 trunk control measures developed for the purposes of classification; (ii) to rank the objective measures, according to the largest effects on performance. Using a new testing device, 14 elite sit-skiers performed two upright seated press tests and one simulated poling test to evaluate trunk strength. They were also subjected to unpredictable bal…

Uusia elämyksiä ja kehonhallintaa : toimintatutkimus toiminnallisesta harjoittelusta osana koululiikuntaa

2014

Katri Vesaluoma (2014). Uusia elämyksiä ja kehonhallintaa. Toimintatutkimus toiminnallisesta harjoittelusta osana koululiikuntaa. Liikuntakasvatuksen laitos, Jyväskylän yliopisto, Lii-kuntapedagogiikan pro gradu -tutkielma, 70s., 8 liitettä. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää, miten toiminnallinen harjoittelu soveltuu koululii-kuntaan. Keskeisenä tehtävänä oli tutkia, miten opiskelijat ja opettaja kokevat toiminnallisen harjoittelun osana lukion liikuntakasvatusta. Lisäksi tutkittiin, millaisia muutoksia opiskeli-joiden keskivartalonhallinnassa ja dynaamisessa tasapainossa tapahtui neljän viikon harjoitte-lujakson aikana. Tutkimusmenetelmänä käytettiin toimintatutkimusta, jonka tarkoit…
