Muscle-tendon architecture in Kenyans and Japanese : Potential role of genetic endowment in the success of elite Kenyan endurance runners
2022
Aim The specificity of muscle-tendon and foot architecture of elite Kenyan middle- and long-distance runners has been found to contribute to their superior running performance. To investigate the respective influence of genetic endowment and training on these characteristics, we compared leg and foot segmental lengths as well as muscle-tendon architecture of Kenyans and Japanese males (i) from infancy to adulthood and (ii) non-athletes versus elite runners. Methods The 676 participants were divided according to their nationality (Kenyans and Japanese), age (nine different age groups for non-athletes) and performance level in middle- and long-distance races (non-athlete, non-elite and elite …
"That is why I gave in to age my competitive ability but not my soul!" : a spiritual journey in endurance running
2011
In this article, I explore the spiritual dimensions of running. I draw on theological and existential perspectives, athletic career research as well as post-sport ideologies to construct a multi-voiced representation of the spiritual meanings of endurance running current in Finnish running culture(s). Through narrative, analysis, reflexivity, interpretation and theorizing this study aimed to gain a deeper understanding of how distance runners negotiate dominant discourses on sport and exercise in the process of making running meaningful to them. In the analysis I examined the Finnish runner’s magazine Juoksija for the years 2001-2010. Over this time span studied, I found a variety of data d…
Evaluation of nocturnal vs. morning measures of heart rate indices in young athletes
2022
Purpose The purpose of this study was to compare heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability in young endurance athletes during nocturnal sleep and in the morning; and to assess whether changes in these values are associated with changes in submaximal running (SRT) and counter-movement jump (CMJ) performance. Methods During a three-week period of similar training, eleven athletes (16 ± 1 years) determined daily HR and heart rate variability (RMSSD) during sleep utilizing a ballistocardiographic device (Emfit QS), as well as in the morning with a HR monitor (Polar V800). Aerobic fitness and power production were assessed employing SRT and CMJ test. Results Comparison of the average values fo…
Neuromuscular, hormonal and oxidative stress responses to endurance running exercises in well-trained runners
2007
The aim of this study was to investigate to which type of running exercises well trained endurance runners respond more favourably with regard to acute neuromuscular and endocrinological responses and exercise-induced oxidative stress. It was hypothesized that these responses depend on the type of running exercise and relate to the physical characteristics. Altogether nine different running exercises and a long walking exercise were performed by a total of 88 male athletes. An intermittent exercise consisting of progressive 20 s runs decreased vertical jump performance in middle distance runners (MID), but improved it in marathon runners (MAR). An 18 – 24 min exhaustive test run, a 40 min i…
Akuutti väsymys submaksimaalisessa tunnin kestävyysjuoksussa kestävyyskuntoilijoilla
2014
Johdanto. Kestävyyssuorituskyvyn suorana fysiologisena mittarina on perinteisesti pidetty maksimaalista hapenottokykyä, mutta viimeisen reilun vuosikymmenen ajan on kestävyysjuoksun hermolihasjärjestelmän rooli osattu myös huomioida. Väsymiseen kestävyyssuorituksen aikana vaikuttaa olennaisesti erityisesti suorituksen kesto, intensiteetti ja harjoitustausta. Suorituksen aikaista väsymistä arvioitaessa käytetään yleisesti hapenkulutusta mittaamaan suorituksen taloudellisuutta. Tämän työn tarkoituksena oli mitata sydän- ja verenkiertoelimistön muutosten lisäksi hermolihasjärjestelmän väsymystä kestävyyskuntoilijoilla tunnin submaksimaalisessa kestävyysjuoksukuormituksessa. Menetelmät. Tutkimu…
Serum hormone concentrations and physical performance during concurrent strength and endurance training in recreational male and female endurance run…
2011
To investigate the effects of concurrent strength and endurance training on physical performance and serum hormone levels a total of 32 recreational endurance runners were trained for 18 weeks. Subjects were divided into four training groups separated by the strength training mode and gender. The groups were women’s and men’s combined maximal and explosive strength training group (WME; n=9 and MME; n=9), and women’s and men’s muscle endurance strength training group (WE; n= 8 & ME; n=8). The training was executed in three consecutive periods (I; 10 weeks, II; 4 weeks and III; 4 weeks). The endurance training in all groups was low-intensity (below lactate threshold) running throughout the wh…

Sports injuries in Finnish elite cross-country skiers, swimmers, long-distance runners and soccer players
2011
In sports with different exercise-loading characteristics, acute and overuse injury profiles and gender differences in injuries were investigated. In addition, trainingrelated risk factors for overuse injuries in endurance athletes were studied. This twelve-month retrospective questionnaire study comprised Finnish elite crosscountry skiers (n=149), swimmers (n=154), long-distance runners (n=143) and soccer players (n=128) aged 15–35 years. Questionnaires were sent to the athletes in each sports at the end of the 2006 competition season. Athletes who ended their sports career because of injury were studied in more detail by means of a telephone interview (n=20) 7-11 months after the question…

Juoksun kinematiikka eritasoisilla 1500 m:n juoksijoilla kilpailuvauhdissa
2007
