Erasmus exchange students : A behind-the-scenes view into an ELF community of practice

The present paper examines how some Erasmus exchange students studying temporarily at the University of Szeged or at the Charles University in Prague are socialized in(to) their new communities of practice. The paper adopts a language socialization perspective combined with a community of practice approach, and thus contributes to a vastly under-researched area within ELF. The paper reveals that the participants collect first hand experience of using ELF within their newly emerging Erasmus community of practice. Tämän tutkielman tarkoitus on ottaa selvää, millä tavoin yliopistossa opintojaan aloittavat ruotsin ja englannin kielten opiskelijat ovat oppineet näitä kieliä peruskoulussa ja lukiossa. Kyse on siis heidän käsityksistään. Vertailen kummankin kielen sisällä, mitkä tavat ovat toimineet ja mitkä eivät sekä löytyykö niiden välillä yhtäläisyyksiä tai eroja. Lisäksi vertailen kielten välillä, miten ruotsia ja englantia on opittu parhaiten ja vastaavasti huonoiten. Tutkimuksen aineisto on peräisin Noviisista ekspertiksi- projektista ja se koostuu kahdesta avokysymyksestä, jotka ovat osa laajempaa kyselylomaketta. The present dissertation examines the impact of (computerised) adaptive corrective feedback, that is, feedback dynamically adapting to learners’ abilities, in English as a second/foreign language (L2) and explores the ways to maximise this impact. The study was inspired by the sociocultural perspective on development, which had implications for the interpretation of the results, including those obtained through statistical data analyses. Sociocultural theory (SCT) is a powerful basis for exploring and guiding L2 (second/foreign language) learner development. For the most part, however, the focus of classroom SCT-L2 has been on single activities, for example, teacher mediation of learners’ writing process or peer scaffolding. In this paper, we expand on these studies, building on Vygotsky’s (1997) metaphor of teacher as a creator of learner development. Linguistic, sociolinguistic, and pragmatic competence as criteria in assessing vocational language skills: the case of Finland

The content of the assessment criteria used in assessing vocationally oriented language competence in the Finnish Competency-Based Qualifications was examined. The data consisted of the National Core Curricula, eight education providers’ assessment criteria used in rating performances in the Qualification of Business and Administration, and thematic interviews conducted with 12 language teachers and four workplace experts. The data were analysed qualitatively. The results showed that on the lower levels of language competence, sociolinguistic and pragmatic competences were considered important in compensating for lacking linguistic competence. Tässä artikkelissa esitellään dynaamista käyttöpohjaista lähestymistapaa (dynamic usage-based approach), joka tutkii oppijankieltä dynaamisena systeeminä. Soveltavan kielitieteen kentällä dynaamisten systeemien näkökulmaa on sovellettu laajasti: esimerkiksi monikielisyyden, kielipolitiikan ja sosiolingvistiikan kysymyksiä on lähestytty dynaamisten systeemien näkökulmasta (ks. tiivistelmää teoriaa soveltavista tutkimuksista Hiver, Al-Hoorie & Evans 2021).
