S-pot - A benchmark in spotting signs within continuous signing

In this paper we present S-pot, a benchmark setting for evaluating the performance of automatic spotting of signs in continuous sign language videos. The benchmark includes 5539 video files of Finnish Sign Language, ground truth sign spotting results, a tool for assessing the spottings against the ground truth, and a repository for storing information on the results. In addition we will make our sign detection system and results made with it publicly available as a baseline for comparison and further developments. peerReviewed

Prosodiaa on yleisesti pidetty vaikeana osa-alueena vieraan kielen ääntämisen oppimisessa. Sen merkitys ymmärretyksi tulemisessa ja mielekkäässä kommunikoinnissa on kuitenkin kiistaton. Tämän pro gradu -tutkielman tavoitteena oli selvittää, kuinka suomenkieliset ruotsin pää- ja sivuaineopiskelijat oppivat ääntämisessään tuottamaan riikinruotsille ominaista prosodiaa kuuden viikon mittaisen ääntämiskurssin aikana. Tutkimus toteutettiin äänittämällä kuuden opiskelijan puhetta kurssin alussa ja lopussa. Opiskelijoilta äänitetyt identtiset lauseet analysoitiin akustisesti kuuden parametrin suhteen. Internet- ja digiaika ovat luoneet informaalin kielenoppimisen tueksi lukuisia uusia mahdollisuuksia. Blogosfääri on yksi näistä. Tässä kirjoituksessa pohditaan espanjankielisen blogosfäärin hyödyntämistä espanjan kielen oppimisessa ja opetuksessa, osittain oppijan mielenkiinnon kohteista käsin. This article seeks to answer the question, 'What is the value of plurilingualism'? by first of all exploring some different terms from Finnish and English that suggest different ways of understanding the world. The article then goes on to outline the importance of mother tongues as a way of rooting a child into a culture, whilst plurilingualism provides the child with different ways of understanding the world. The second half of the article uses a story to explore the challenges of sharing different understandings with others and outlines how these ideas can be introduced to children. nonPeerReviewed

Kansainvälinen harjoittelu – pelimerkit työelämän käyttöön!

CIMO on kansainvälistänyt jo yli kaksikymmentä vuotta suomalaisia nuoria työelämää varten. Yksi hyvä väline on ollut opintoihin liittyvä harjoittelu ulkomailla. Työelämässä tarvitaankin yhä monipuolisempaa kielitaitoa, mutta myös muita kansainvälisen kokemuksen kasvattamia ominaisuuksia. Viimeisen kymmenen vuoden aikana harjoittelijoita on lähetetty yhä enemmän muualle kuin englanninkielisille alueille, viime vuosina myös yhä enemmän Euroopan ulkopuolelle. Euroopan ulkopuoliset maat kiinnostavatkin suomalaisia nuoria kovasti. The chapter is a theoretical discussion of the concept of personal repertoire and its application in the context of applied linguistics, particularly in the study of language learning and development. Functional neuroimaging allows investigation of the timing properties of the brain mechanisms underlying covert language processing. This paper presents a review of the use of the neuroimaging technique called Event-Related Potentials (ERPs) in sign language (SL) research. In the field of neurolinguistics, ERPs have been widely used in the study of spoken language, but their use in SL is still rare. Studying the neurocognitive aspects of SL could lead to a better understanding of the specific processing of SL in the brain.
